dajmno
I just purchased the core sound attenuator cable (20db). I've been getting some good recordings using:Core Sound Binuals > Batter Box > RH10I don't believe the bass roll off (it's the switchable battbox that is sold on core sound) on the battery box works with the RH10, so I simply use it as a power source, and run the microphones to the "line in" on the RH10.My recordings, like I mentioned before, do sound pretty good, but it wouldn't hurt to get a recording with a tad less bass. I know the attenuator cable brings the "signal" down, but does it in the process also reduce the bass? Once, I receive my attenuator cable, I'm planning on taping my next show with the csbs and attenuator cable, via "mic in" without the battery box, and see what kind of capture I get. Also, is csbs > batt. box> attenuator cable > "line in" a viable option?Thanksoh, and you can hear samples of my recordings on http://www.dajmno.com Edited November 26, 2005 by daj
greenmachine
Without external power supply / battery module, the attenuator reduces the already small enough bias voltage (plug in power) from the recorder's mic-in and thus the mic's dynamic range. High SPL handling abilities will be reduced, S/N decreases. All frequencies get equally attenuated, there's no roll-off effect. You're better off to continue using battery module -> line-in without any attenuation - the line input requires no further attenuation. The low frequency amount can be corrected precisely via software afterwards instead of having to use a fixed 6dB/oct filter/roll-off. dajmno
good infothanks!
greenmachine
I didn't know you can separate the csbs from the battery box. Can you?
dajmno
you can, there is a mini xlr plug that is in the middle of the cord that goes hooked up to the batt. box, then at the end of the mic cord the regular mini 1/8 stereo plug.I imagine, they would still work even though the mini xlr plug isn't hooked up, not sure however.my setup:i just did a quick trial, in which I EQed the bass down on one of the tracks to my recording via soundforge, sounds good! greenmachine
In any case, be sure to keep a copy of the unedited original file. You might change your mind about post processing later.Where do you place the mics when recording?
dajmno
usually just clip them to the collar of my jacket (chest-high), sometimes will clip them on my eyeglasses.
A440
I do a lot of recording on shirt-collar tabs, shoulder-high. Chest-high might muffle highs and bring out bass. Do you hear any difference when they're up on your eyeglasses?
dajmno
little difference, when I'm up on the eyeglasses the sound tends to be clear and crisper, I'd say the amount of bass is the same, maybe a tad less. I prefer the sound that I get when I have them on my eyeglasses, but can't always use that option.
