2 CD drive problems

My two problems with Sonicstage 3.3:

1) It is simply not recognising my CD/DVD writer - I can not burn atrac CD's

2) CDDB is not working - I hit the CD info button, it asks me if I want to register with CDDB. I hit yes and nothing happens.

Any pointers would be appreciated..

Hello,

ad 1) Some other forum members including myself are still seeking an explanation/solution for this behaviour. SonicStage help mentions something cryptical like "depending on your operating environment, you may be able or not be able to burn Audio/ATRAC CDs".

ad 2) Most probably, your computer is part of a private network with external firewall and internet proxy server. You must specify the proxy's name/address and port (usually 8080) to SonicStage in this case. This can be done somewhere in the advanced options menu.

My work PC has a firewall, but it seems to let most things have a free time of communicating with the net. My home PC also sonicstage 3.3 has ZoneAlarm which has full trust for Sonicstage both ways.

Interestingly in my options>CD settings> CD Info (or something to that effect) there are no options whatsoever!

Hi,

It's there, although in a place where most don't expect it :-). The path is as follows (hope that I translated correctly from my german version of SoncStage though):

Menu "Options" -> "CD Drive Settings" -> "Get CD Info" -> "CDDB". Check the "Manual Proxy Settings" radio button, push "Proxy Settings" and viola, there we go!

Regarding the problem of CD burning not possible at some installations, I had an interesting experience after I installed SonicStage on my "private" home PC yesterday! Guess what, all CD brning functions are available there - even one to burn MP3-CDs :-)

Until yesterday, I only installed Sonicstage on my work's computers which belong to my company's corporate network that is shielded from the raw outside world by external firewalls and proxy servers and are - I think this is the more interesting point here -

Members of a Windows Computer Domain!

This leads me to the assumption, that SonicStage does not like you to burn CDs on computers that are not totally "owned" by you, since the Windows domain admin can overrule almost any right the local user has over such a computer by means of so called "group policies".

Would be interesting, if others that share the problem of not being able to burn CDs can confirm this...

Cheers - Killroy.

Running Windows 2000 SP3 at home and Windows XP (sp?) on work laptop.

Well, that might be an explaination. Although Windows versions down to Windows® 98 Second Edition are supported, Windows® XP Home Edition, XP Professional or XP Media Center Edition with latest service pack are recommended. The term "depending on the operational environment,..." leaves much room for various interpretations :-(

checked my work laptop and I have XP Professional with the latest service pack... still no CD burning.

I can live without it,

the problem is sonicstage just lumps all my OMA files in one directory so burning an atrac CD in Nero with just the albums I want is tricky.

.oma is not a good archive format because it's keyed to your individual SonicStage installation. If that computer dies, your .oma files become unplayable. Once the files are in My Library, use Hi-MDRenderer to convert them to something more portable like mp3 or, better (but bigger, because it's lossless) flac.

I managed to take my OMA files from one PC to another with Sonicstage 3.3. Atrac is good for me as I only use MD for portable use. I'm not a quality freak, if I want good quality I'll go back to my original source - CD. I also have a very slow PC at home so storing in mp3 then converting to atrac takes almost the same as realtime (although get nicely labled tracks).

Incidently I got the burning working by downloading the Sony connect version rather than the MDCF package...

okay but don't burn them as atrac audio files pug. for oma backups do it as plain data files through nero or whatever else you use. atrac cds are really only for use in atrac cd players, a somewhat dying breed.
