Problems with Connect

I really really like my shiny silver NW A3000. I bought it as an early Christmas for myself and the machine itself is just fantastic. However CONNECT is about to make me throw my laptop against the wall. For some reason it just stopped working three days ago. Nothing new has happened on my PC, no new software, as far as I can tell no spyware or viruses, no upgrades, not anything. I have phoned Sony's helpline and some guys from the helpdesk are going to get back to me. However my 28 days window to return the device runs out very soon. Should I keep it and wait for all to be sweetness and roses or should I go and get myself an IPOD. Never heard any of my IPOD owning friends complain.

All suggestions will be warmly received.

Cheers

Andrew

There are many people here who can help answer questions, but you'll have to give us some information to go on.

I have an iPod as well as an A-1000 and I can tell you plenty of things that really bite using the iPod: I can only use one PC with it using iTunes, no way to listen to music directly from the iPod on a PC, poor quality audio playback from the iPod, etc.

Each product has +'s and -'s, so its a matter of who you talk to and what they use it for.

I said to the other person who also wanted to return his player, be patient and try to work things out. The player itself is a fantastic device. You've just got to find a way to work around things... If CONNECT is really unworkable, try SonicStage 3.3, you can download it here somewhere

I'm having the same problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 5 times so far but connect player will not start. I've deleted all the folders on my hard drive for connct and removed the entries from the registry without success. I now have a A3000 with no tunes. Tried Sonicstage 3.3 that would not snyc with it and when i uninstalled connect player sonicstage stopped working unable to get that working either after 2 reinstalls.(player makes a nice looking paper weight though)

I bought an NWA-1000 but gave it up as a bad job in nothing flat. It wasn't just the abysmal Connect software that got to me but also a whole host of other issues, including: totally inadequate playlist creation, no real bookmarks, lousy Sony support, little on the accessories front. I bought an iPod nano to replace it (I had already bought an iPod 5G). I am totally satisfied with both iPods, but, in the event you do buy an iPod, I would advise you to buy a good case because both the nano and the 5G are very easily scratched. I have an iSkin Duo for the nano, and have just managed to get hold of an iSkin evo3 for the 5G.

In answer to C_player's complaints about the iPod:

"I can only use one PC with it using iTunes"

This is simply not so. From iPod FAQ:

"When you first connect iPod to your computer, iPod recognizes that computer as its 'home' computer. Each time you connect, iPod automatically downloads the music library stored on it. When you connect iPod to a different computer [using the same operating system], iPod asks for permission before synchronizing with this music library. If you choose Auto-sync, iPod recognizes the second computer as its home computer and breaks the link with the original computer. If you do not choose Auto-sync, iPod switches to manual update mode, allowing you to selectively drag songs, albums, or playlists from the second computer to your iPod."

"no way to listen to music directly from the iPod on a PC"

Yes you can if you manually manage your iPod (I use the excellent Anapod Explorer software which achieves the same thing via "TrueStream" and also allows you to pick your own player).

"poor quality audio playback from the iPod, etc."

Sound quality is of course very subjective. The simple fact is that the new iPod 5G has achieved excellent reviews for its sound quality (the former problems with distortion have been eliminated) as has the nano. To confirm this, check out popular audiophile websites like Head-Fi:
