Did Sony actually build a portable digital recorder that can't be used with a quality mic-preamp-AD converter?

To put it another way, Is there a Marantz PDM-670 in my future?

Thanks, alan

The MDs have a stereo mic, line and optical input. So, if your preamp of choice has one of these as an output then you will be able to use it with an MD.

bjsilva,

Do you happen to know for sure if he will be able to upload digital/optical recordings done with the M100 to his MAC?

Yes, THAT is the question.

If I understand the Owners Manual, uploads can only be from original ANALOG recordings -- which seems to rule out ANY sort of digital input while recording.

If I'm wrong please set me straight.

Thanks

I used to own a MZ-M10 which is almost similar to M100 and it does only analog transfer from Hi-MD PCM recorded material only to Mac.

I am sure of it because I tried digital and couldn't transfer it. So I took the damn thing back. I am still reconsidering Hi-MD but I am waiting for Sony to do any further support on this format. If 3rd gen come up, then I may consider this format again...until then...

Sorry, didn't see that as the question :) I have very little doubt that Sony will, at some point, allow it. But if you need digital copies of digital recordings faster than real-time (I thought you could record the audio digitally while playing the MD from the computer - Windows only, but I'm not familiar with it nor the Mac software for the M100) then you'll probably have to wait for a deck to arrive (if ever), or just go with something else.

You can transfer optical recordings to PC just fine with all HiMD recorders. However the built-in WAV converter for SonicStage will not convert the optically recorded files. A workaround is to use MarC's HiMdRenderer.

That is only for PC though... Not sure if and when a MAC utility will come around that can do the same.
