Just got an MZ-NH700, my first HiMD unit (dirt cheap bundle from Minidisco, btw).

I have searched forums and FAQs and pretty much believe the answer to this is NO.. but I'll ask just to be sure:

Can I transfer a HiMD track to the harddrive using Sonic Stage and have it converted immediately to an mp3 file?

Yes, I know I can have it automatically saved as a .wav, and I can use CoolEdit to convert the wav to mp3 pretty quickly. But that's a two-step process, and I was hoping for a single step.

Thanks.

Hi, yes you can my friend!

Marcs HIMD renderer does this, available in the download section on this site

Hi, the description is not that clear but it is possible to do it in a one step process using it. you just choose mp3 instead of .oma for file output. You can also upload and convert multiple files quickly in one step, very useful! You have to click scan himd, then select the file(s) you want to convert and double click them

Wow  , this is what I need. Many thanks for clarifying that.

Now... I can't get it to work. I have latest version of renderer... when I hit Scan HiMD, it reads the tracks fine. Then... I chose LAME mp3 as output encoding. It says the dll is missing. But the id3lib.dll is in the same folder as the Renderer executable. Hmmm.

Some else posted this at the author's website and the response from Marc was:

"Anyway, HIMDRenderer 0.53 uses the much better ID3lib.dll. This DLL is included with the 0.53 release zip. Simply copy this DLL to the HIMDRenderer program folder"

But that's what I've done. Perhaps this is a bug in the current release....

Anyway, I'm on the right track!

One step forward, two steps back

I dowloaded LAME mp3 dll, and that was accepted by renderer. I select a track from HiMD, and hit "extract." After a long while, I get a lengthy error message (609-O-4D3) that concludes with:

"This track cannot be converted because it is a recorded track. Track extraction will only work with tracks that originated from your PC."

What I want to do is record audio on HiMD unit and transfer a track or tracks directly to PC to an mp3 in one step. It seems like the Renderer will not do this -- and I must use SonicStage to a wav then convert it to an mp3 with CoolEdit or another encoder.

Thoughts, anyone?

Well, yes and no...

You can import to SonicStage without having it automatically convert to WAV, then use HiMD renderer to convert the uploaded OMA file to mp3 directly. This is particularly useful (actually the only way to convert) if you are importing track recorded via optical-in. I realize that it's still a two step process, but it bypasses the need to convert to WAV first. Also HiMD renderer has a batch conversion so you can import numerous recordings into SonicStage, and have HiMD renderer convert all of them to mp3 in one go.

The "extract" function on HiMD renderer is useful if you have transferred tracks to your HiMD via sonicstage, and then inadvertantly deleted the files from the computer, but as you noticed it will only work with files you had previously transferred from SonicStage to begin with.

EDIT: Just to be clear... I think this may be the quickest way to import to pc and get an mp3. Unfortunately, for some reason Sony didn't think that uploading and converting to the most popular music file format in one step was important.

That's because they were too busy watching Apple's profits soar with the iPod. :D

Anyway, thanks for clarifying all that. It truly is a convoluted process. Its great this forum of dedicated users is here to clear up the confusion.
