NW-A3000 - Extremely unimpressed

Question

Well ive just about had it with my NWA300, ive tried my desktop and laptop, freshinstalled about 5 times each, and tried loading 10 tracks with no luck!

so in my extremely pissy mood Sony have just been send a e-mail

I have recently purchased a 20GB NW-A3000 mp3 player.  On attempting to transfer music to the player i have been unsucessfull.  The software is extremely buggy and i have been able to transfer 10 tracks and no more.  My computer is a high spec machine and is double the reccomended spec in places, i am also a University student studying computers so i am no way lay when in comes to computers and i am still unable to get the tracks loaded.

I am extremely annoyed as i paid £200 for the player and i would expect for the cost to at least be able to use the product.  Does sony have an idea when they will be able to fix this as it seems to be a widespread problem to all NW-A3000 users.  I have purchased sony products all my life and have been extremely happy with the quality and level of service, after this experience i am having serious thoughts as to nolonger buying sony products.

Many thanks

Antonio Cassidy

Have you tried updating Connect before starting it? Mine has worked fine since I did that.

The Sony players are great, but the software has always been lacking. They finally got SonicStage working reasonably well, and then decided to launch the Connect Player...

Perhaps you would find using SonicStage 3.3 a suitable interim way to enjoy your new player until Sony gets Connect working better. That's what I am doing with my A608.

First reply from Sony:

Dear Mr Cassidy

Thank you for your recent enquiry.

I was sorry to read about the problems you are experiencing with the Connect

software, I can understand this must be disappointing and frustrating.

Currently we are aware of issues with the software build version 1.0.00.10183,

and these issues are being looked to be resolves as soon as possible. You can

download a patch that will update the software to build version 1.0.02.11170 by

clicking on the following link:

<http://www.sonydigital-link.com/DNA/ConnectPlayer/Update/Update.asp?l=en&ul=en>

.

However if you already have this version or after updating it, you are still

having problems please fill in the below questionnaire so we can investigate the

issue further.

They then asked me a series of questions about my system/player. I have installed XP myself etc

they then replied with

Dear Mr Cassidy

Thank you for your reply.

It is with regret that we are unable to provide support, or troubleshooting

assistance, for Connect Play when used in conjunction with operating systems

that have not been installed at factory level. In these cases, the operating

environment is an unstable environment which inhibits our ability to provide

effective help.

I fully appreciate that my reply will cause further disappointment, however

these facts are mentioned on the packaging of the Walkman under the section

covering system requirements. In these circumstances it is advisable to take

this matter up with your supplying retailer (as customer's have the opportunity

to discuss any concerns or doubts about this prior to the purchase being made).

I can only suggest you ensure you have the latest version of Connect Player

running, for more information on this and to download any updates that do become

available please click on the following link: www.sonydigital-link.com.

I am sorry that we are unable to provide direct help on this particular

occasion.

I like the tone of their response. Too often customer service by email results in weird replies (mean, accusatory, badly worded...)

That said, my PC comes with the factory installed WindowsXP and Connect player still doesn't work, and Sony still couldn't do anything to help. So there goes that argument.

That'll be the standard Sony get out clause for all software that doesn't work, they've been using that one since SonicStage first came out.

The packaging actually states :-

System Requirements

OS Win XP/Home/Pro/Media Centre 2004&5/Win 2000 SP4

here's the clincher................. (excluding handmade PC)

We do not ensure trouble free operation on all computers that satisfy the system requirements.

So.................. regardless of whether you assembled and installed the PC yourself or went out and bought a 'ready made' one they still won't guarantee that anything will work correctly.

Are all Sony PC's, laptops etc. assembled without being touched by human hands??.......... if they are not then is it safe to assume that they are 'handmade' as well, if so they won't even support their own hardware.

If you own a 'ready made' system and have to do a fresh reinstall of your OS does this then render your PC unsupportable because you installed the OS yourself even though the hardware meets Sony's requirements ??

It would be interesting to know just how many of the members on this site actually own and operate 'handmade' systems, maybe we should be posting our system specs then Sony may get a better idea of the hardware their 'supporters' are using and help them to get a better product out into the market place.
