More information might help to address the problem.

What format is the track?

Does it have a title longer than 256 characters?

Does it play back correctly through other players?

Did it work in previous versions of SonicStage?

Do you get any error messages?

What soundcard is in your computer?

It is in MP3 format.

The title is not longer than 256 characters

It plays back correctly in other player.

It did work in older versions of SonicStage

I don't get an error message but as soon as I press "stop" or any other play controls, the program crashes and i have to ctrl+alt+del to stop it.

I have an integrated soundcard from Dell.

I hope the above will help the problem

thanx...baker

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 system running Windows XP SP2

I have SonicStage 3.4.01.13062

Pentium 4 HT 2.60Ghz, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, USB 2.0, SoundMax Integrated digital audio

I dont know what codecs are installed.

I am running Norton Anti-Virus 2005 althought SonicStage 3.2 had no conflicts with it.

That rules out a lot of obvious causes.

One other question:

Does it happen with just one specific track or with all mp3?

It happens with all MP3s

I dont know what codecs are installed.

Codecs are listed in Settings/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Hardare/Audio Codecs under the Properties tab.

Do you have any non-mp3 files, anything uploaded from a Hi-MD that would be an .oma file? Have you tried playing back one of them?

Has anything else major changed in your computer since you installed 3.2? A Windows Media Player update, installing other audio playback software, etc.? Anything that might affect either the soundcard or the audio codecs? Or anything that runs busily in the background--like Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta, Quicktime, printer files, etc.? SonicStage has always hogged computer power--maybe 3.2 was just under the limit and 3.4 is greedier.

One guess is that something has messed up your mp3 codec. But if .oma playback is also a problem, it may also be your soundcard driver. I hope someone else can advise you on how to replace a codec if necessary. But it couldn't hurt to go to the Dell website and download and reinstall the soundcard driver for starters.

It appears that that certain .oma files will play. Only ones that don't have a corresponding mp3 file in my library. I tried playing an mp3 file that wasn't in my library and it wouldn't play. I do have an mp3 codec installed and i updated my audio drivers. It still wont work.

thanks

If I understand you correctly, you can't play mp3 files in other players, like Windows Media Player or Winamp either. And since SonicStage will play back .oma files but not .mp3 then your mp3 codec may be damaged.

I have the LAME mp3 codec on my computer but frankly I've forgotten how I installed it.

You could try this link, or wait a bit and see if one of the fulltime computer experts on this site can give you some advice.

i've never found it to be so. the guy who writes cdex is also a contributer to lame but i'd assume he'd not put an unstable codec into an otherwise excellent piece of software, niave, maybe but i've used it with no problems

cdex &c. use the lame dll. That is NOT a system codec.

Last I recall [within 2 months ago] the lame acm wrapper [which enables its partial use as a system codec, and that's for encoding only if I'm not mistaken] is still experimental and unstable.

Point being - the lame dll is NOT a system codec, and is completely useless to SS [which requires a directshow filter]. The ACM wrapper is unstable and [last I knew] still for encoding only, also making it useless to SS.
