Sony_Fan
I use to convert my MP3s to ATRAC3plus 256, but I decided to give 352kbps a try and I was very impressed with the sound quality when played back on my RH10. I didn't notice any loss in quality and it almost sounded as good as a CD ripped to ATRAC3plus 256. I know I've suggested to others to convert MP3s to ATRAC3plus 256 because direct MP3 playback on Hi-MD just plain sucks, but try ATRAC3plus 352 and see if it works for you. I think I'll stick with that from now on. Edited April 1, 2006 by Chris G
ro0tz
Encoding an audio stream TWICE gives an incredible amount of quality loss, artifacts and distortion.
Sony_Fan
Encoding an audio stream TWICE gives an incredible amount of quality loss, artifacts and distortion. No distortion and it sounds much better than direct MP3 playback. But each to his own.
ZosoIV
No distortion and it sounds much better than direct MP3 playback. But each to his own. That's because of the RH10's issues with MP3, though. All things being equal, the ATRAC file is objectively worse than the source MP3. The question is always one of "can you hear the difference?" In this case, the quality loss from transcoding is far outweighed by the gain in HF content from using the ATRAC decoder on the RH10 and not the flawed MP3 one.
