ljadkins
I've used my MZ-rh910 and in ear binaural Mic's to record some things.I wish there was a plugin for sonic stage that could give me that sound. The sound is so spread out even behind you.Unlike normal music recordings setup for loudspeakers.A good Binaural recording on my MD just sounds better than my home system. And I'm using a pair Magnapan's so that's saying something.Sony if your listening please look into a way for us to get this kind of sound out of our music. Adding this kind of quality sound to your products would be a real Ipod killer.
Christopher
The ATRAC codec will actually get some updates this year related to stereo effect in this sense. I discussed this briefly with a few associates during CES and they are interested in creating exactly what you described; it's odd to see this topic now that I think of it, as the coincidence is exact. ozpeter
I can't imagine how you could get meaningful binaural sound out of conventionally recorded sound - the information simply isn't there. Recording binaural sound requires a specific mic technique. You can no more create a stereo file from a mono file (sure, pseudo-stereo, but not one which correctly places the sources in the soundfield).Using X/Y > MS > X/Y techniques you can widen the soundstage of a 'normal' stereo recording and emphasise out-of-phase components which can add to the headphone listening experience, but that's a very straightforward thing to do. When preparing others' classical recordings for broadcast I frequently find that they've been recorded with such poor stereo mic placement that the result is close to mono - using MS width expansion they magically come alive, and the original placement of the musicians and the sound of the hall is clearly revealed. But that's just a matter of recovering the information that's already there.
