HI-MD wav importer mac problem

I am running HI-MD wav importer on a mini running OSW 10.3.9 w/1 Gb ram. . I can download the first few (at least the first 2) tracks to my desktop, after that, I get "Warning - Import failed. target file could not be created." This has happened on multiple disks. Any Mac users facing a similar problem? Thanks.

I get a different, but possibly related problem.

I can transfer (all files are linear-PCM) files, but occasionally it hangs. The transfer starts, the pop-up displays status and as it progresses I see that more and more bytes have been transfered. Then, without any message, it simply stops. The indication of how many bytes have been transfered simply freezes. I wait and wait and nothing happens.

I tried to force quit Hi-MD wave importer and it won't force quit.

The only way I have of restarting is to unplug the cable, close everything and start again.

I would say that file transfer hangs about once per 20 files. After restarting the file will load correctly, so it is definitely not a problem with the recorded file.

Any ideas?? I've searched the web for any reference to this problem, and haven't found any reference to it, so I am beginning to suspect bad hardware.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is your hard drive close to full? Possibly the software needs room while it's converting the file, and some cache somewhere is overloaded.

Mount Point : / Capacity : 74.4 GB (79,892,106,240 Bytes)

Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Available : 56.4 GB (60,511,158,272 Bytes)

Permissions Enabled : Yes Used : 18.0 GB (19,380,944,896 Bytes)

Number of Folders : 59,204 Number of Files : 240,853

As you can see I have 56.4 GB available.

Similarly, do you have a lot of programs running simultaneously? It probably also needs considerable processor power.

Again, nope. I usually have firefox open and the Mac mail utility just sitting there.

But I will try again after closing all application other than HiMD.

I realize that I have connected thru a midi port expander -- aha!! very suspect as I think about it. I'll try without that. Since it doesn't happen every time, I may have to try for a day or so to see for sure if the problem is fixed.

Thanks for the response.

It is very helpful to know that it is probably limited to my system/setup/hardware. I originally suspected that there was a known bug and was looking for a patch/update, but I see that many, many people are successful with the software, so it must be my system.

I'll post when I have more data.

Thanks again.

USB hubs have often been a problem with SonicStage, so maybe it's the same with the Mac software. I hope connecting directly makes your freezes go away.

That seems to be it.

When I connect thru the hub, it hangs if I do anything else on the computer when it is transfering. E.g. opening a window, opening the mail util. Well, it doesn't hang every time, but maybe 1/3 times.

If I connect directly, I can load the computer heavily with other tasks and still transfer. Open windows, copy files, download mail or files from the internet, whatever. No problem. I transfered many files without problems.

Anyway, your email implies that changing the hub won't solve the problem, so I guess I will leave it as a direct connect. Luckily I can do that without any difficulty.

Thanks for the posts, they helped a lot.

PS in my earlier post I said "thru the midi port expander". Well, duh, at least you figured out I meant USB port expander.

Hi, I have a different Hi-MD wav importer problem. I had been happily uploading .wav files from my Sony MZ-M100 Hi-MD recorder to my PowerBook running OSX 10.4.6 via the USB port and Sony's Hi-MD WAV Importer. (SUCH an improvement over playing audio out the minidisc's headphone jack!!) But something happened (perhaps, despite my efforts, I disconnected the MD-to-Mac connection when I shouldn't have...) that caused the connection to freak out. Now after repeated attempts, I can't get the Mac to recognize the MD at all (via either of two USB ports). Anyone else had this problem?

I reloaded the wav importer software, and that worked until I (very properly) disconnected the recorder again. Now I'm back to square 1 despite reloading the software more than once.

I can still play audio out of the minidisc and into the Mac, and I can still successfully hook other devices (like an iMic) up to the USB port, but the fast digital connection seems to have evaporated. Any advice? Thanks--

I'm using "Version 1.0 Mac OS X version 10.2 - 10.4" according to the CD. Is there a newer version? If so, where? My quick (possibly inept) googling didn't find any.

Yep, Version 2.0 - http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16424

Try the new version and see if it works.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the new software should allow you to upload Hi-SP and Hi-LP as well (not just PCM). And it should also let you transfer Mp3 files to your recorder.

Thanks raintheory! The software upgrade seems to have done the trick!
