I have an MDX-C7900 car deck...

Hi, 'new' to the forums at least here.

I'm just wondering about the recording formats and which home-audio decks would record properly for my MDX-C7900 (which is listed as using ATRAC4 w/2652AR IC inside.) I know that NetMDs don't work no matter what (I have one, and none of the settings render an MD that actually produces sound (only shows the TOC, etc.) *BUT* I want to make sure of the compatibilities of the home decks vs. the car deck.

I was interested in purchasing either:

MDS-JE510 (Older, but in the same time-frame as my C7900)

or

MDS-JE480 (Newer, although I'm unsure as it says that it records SP but the chip is of ATRAC Type-S DSP.)

Essentially my question is where do the compatibilities lay? Will the C7900 be able to read later model-made but non-NetMD discs?

Thanks for any hints, answers or insight.

Your car deck can only read discs in SP mode, so no LP2 or LP4.

Both the JE510 and JE480 can produce these, but your NetMD should also be able to record discs in SP, so I suggest you try again.

Have a good look through the options, because there should be something like 'transfer in SP mode'. (This is not true SP, though. It is actually LP2, padded out to look like SP. So the sound quality is less than true SP, but this shouldn't matter much when listening in a car.)

... and if you have a NetMD that's not a player only model ('E') or Downloader only ('D') you should be able to make 'real' SP discs in realtime by recording from mic-in or line-in in standard mode (IIRC)

Unfortunately I have a North American model which does not have regular recording inputs of any kind (which is true for a lot of models which DO have them on their Euro/Japanese counterpart.) I have tried recording in the SP mode, but no luck. I just wanted to know if it was really only the 'true SP' that was required regardless of ATRAC version or recording machine.

**EDIT**

So I downloaded the latest revision of SonicStage and did a few test runs of forced SP mode, and luckily it worked. Granted I still want to pick up a table-top deck anyway, but this helps until I actually receive one. Thanks! (It's an MZ-NF520D by the way).
