So I had a bit of a moan to Sony, this is what they said:

Thank you for your recent e-mail. Please allow me to apologise for the delay

in replying.

I was very sorry to read of the difficulties that you have experienced with

your MDR-EX71SL in earphones, and I can understand that this is very

disappointing and frustrating for you.

Unfortunately, we are not aware that the materials used in these earphones

has been changed or why this change has been made, although I would like to

assure that it was not altered to limit the performance of the earphones.

With this in mind, I was surprised to read that you have experienced the

same problem with 3 pairs of the earphones, as we have sold several thousand

of the earphones and have relatively few complaints about them in comparison

to the number sold.

In order for us to examine your earphones I would like to invite you send

them the most recently purchased pair, along with a copy of your receipt for

them to me at the address below. As you have requested that your details be

deleted from our system I will have no record of this correspondence.

Therefore if you choose to send you earphones to me can you please reply to

this e-mail advising me of this and providing permission to retain your

personal details so I can create a case for you. I will of course reply

providing this case reference, so that you can quote this when you send in

the earphones.

Alternatively, if you do not wish me to create a case for you regarding this

matter, please enclose a print out of this e-mail with your earphones and

receipt and quote ref E-mailDP3 as your reference when you send the

earphones in for my attention.

I look forward to your reply.

Please note that your original email and this reply will be deleted, as

requested. However, if you do require further email contact with Sony

United Kingdom Limited, please indicate in your text if you wish to have

your details deleted in line with the Data Protection Act. We will have no

record of this e-mail correspondence.

With regards

Now they can't tell me that a) they didn't change the cord type, and B) noone else has moaned about this. Good to know they want to help though :)

I'm taking my latest pair back to Argos where I got em 6 weeks ago, I bought an extended guarentee for a fiver!!

I had major problems with the EX71's too. Amazon replaced 4 pairs, and after the 4th pair, they said all they could offer was a refund for £34.99. I got the refund and bought a pair of MDR-NE1's, hoping the cable would be of better quality. Since then, they have broken also.

I am now back to using the standard headphones which came with my NW-A608, that appear to have stronger cabeling. This experience has seriously put me off Sony Headphones. Next time i upgrade, it'l be to a different brand.

if it wasn't for the fact that it's only the long cord (that goes round my neck) that goes rotten, I'd agree, but that's the only bit that is ever effected.

I had a pair of other sony's that went round the back a few years back that came with my MZR900 (I think) they just went stiff on the bits that contacted my skin. odd.
