Search for a second unit: AM/FM Unit

I love my rh10, but I want a second unit. One wear I'm not afraid to grab it and don't have to constantly keep it in a case to prevent scratches (which I have tons of now anyway). I also want a unit with a AM/FM tuner remote, here is what I've narrowed it down too, I'm gonna buy used or new off ebay.

NetMD MZ-NF610

NetMD MZ-NF810

HiMD MZ-NHF800

Here's the problem, I'm 15 and don't have a job. I currently have about $165 in my wallet, but don't want to blow it all on a NHF800 which is about what I will have to pay. Although I lose HiMD, I will create a few netmd discs with just my favorite songs, if I have to go down that path. I would strongly prefer the NF810 over the NF610 just buy general looks, but it is really all about price. I think I may be able to get the NetMD units for under $40. What do you guys think? I need second opinions to help me decide what to go for.

Where are you going to find the NetMD units? Are they in good shape? It might be better to spend more on a new MZ-NHF800 (now $180 at minidisco or minidiscaccess, around $125 on Ebay) than to get someone's beat-up NetMD that breaks down.

Also, I have to say, what's the big deal about the radio? On all these units, the MD unit basically supplies battery power to a radio in the remote. You can't record from the radio or do anything else useful with it. Why not get a Hi-MD player/downloader (MZ-NH600D, under $100) and a little $10 pocket radio, which wouldn't be any bigger than the remote anyway?

The NF810 has a microphone jack. The NF610 doesn't--only line-in. If you're going to get either one, make sure they are in good shape. Look carefully at the controls on both the remote and the unit. If paint is worn off from thumb friction, I'd stay away.

Pretty minor detail, but I think the NF810 can also use NiMH.

I've seen new NH700's go for around US$100 on eBay. Another option would be to get that and a radio remote like the 37lt (~$17-25) if you want to stay Hi-MD but with radio function.

Go for the MZ-NHF800 for another Hi-MD unit...I think it'll be worth it. You should be able to find an inexpensive used one if you go the eBay route. A440 makes a good point that if you only want a radio, you could buy just that to save some money, but I like having both built into one unit. During the workday, I'll switch back and forth between the radio and MDs when I get tired of listening to one or the other. Plus, if your MZ-RH10 ever craps out, you'll have a backup unit to play all your MDs.

I never knew you could use a radio remote with the nh700, I just bidded $37 for one now. The AM works too right?

If you click on the link that says "read more here," it leads you to a thread where people have confirmed that both the 39lt and 37lt work with the Euro and Aussie NH700. That thread has some info that you'd be interested in so you should read the whole thing. Good luck!

Thanks. I just one an auction on ebay for a MZ-NE410 (fathers day gift) and mothers day is sunday. So I'm gonna hold off for now (I was outbid on the ebay auction for the 700 anyway). Once I get some more cash, maybe get a job somewhere, I'll get back on track for the NH700.

I've decided I'm not gonna spend $90+ for a second unit, I can live without a radio. I'm now on the hunt for a 600D for under 30 bucks on ebay, will report back. I'm currently bidding on one now. I love my rh10, but would hate to lose or or break it. I can use the 600D as my "grab n go" unit, so to speak. Without worrying about it or being extra careful not to touch the surface and keeping it in a pouch.

Edit - Won it, for 45 bucks w/shipping. A little more than I wanted to spend. It is used, hopefully it is functioning perfectly.

That is something that you should have asked the seller prior to bidding. Just a small tip for your next eBay electronics purchase. :) It will help avoid any nastiness or finger-pointing should the unit be faulty or not up to par.

I did, got no response, so crossed my fingers and went for it.

Edit - Ironically, he just responded (after my purchase) saying it is functioning perfectly with no scratches at all. Sounds good.
