Px Engine: 2.4.35.500

I'm ripping CD's into the library @ ATRAC Advanced Lossless (352Kbs).

This thing runs slower than a 1 legged dog on a perfectly smooth ice pond.

I've flipped over on to another (less powerful machine) and doing the same rips using SS 3.4 -- Much Much Faster.

Don't know what SS 4.0 is doing but I think I might uninstall and go back to 3.4 as I've uploaded all my legacy recordings now.

Anybody else noticed performance problems with SS 4.0.

I'm all in favour of upgrades but surely the BASE features - CD rips etc should not work SLOWER on a newer version.

Cheers

UPDATE

Think I finally found the problem -- was actually a Hard Disk problem -- Hard disk (USB2) was plugged into a USB 1.1 slot. This really SLOWS DOWN the hard disk response times.

If you mix USB devices on the same "string" / hub / set of connections the WHOLE LOT perform at the slowest device speed. I had a scanner also plugged in to the same hub.

Moved the disk to a different set of USB slots --worked fine again.

I keep my music libraries on external hard disks.

Cheers

1kyle... welcome back to the forums... and glad you got the problem sorted out... but perhaps you could rename the thread and/or put a disclaimer about the fact it isn't 4.0's fault right at the beginning of this thread as I can see lots of ignorant posts following from ppl who didn't get past paragraph 1 and just decided 4.0 is crap "jus' as we already believed"

I must add that some CDs do rip really slow. This does not depend on the version of SS, but rather on the DVD or CD drive you are using.

And sometimes SS rips too fast. If you have a defective, or "not quite compliant though it is commercial" CD, then SS will most probably not be able to rip it, since it is unable to slow the drive down, and reports an error after timing out. In this case ripping with a more smart program (like Adobe Audition) may help sometimes.
