hi all,

i have just bought an net md mz-510. which was only for portable listening/ small size/ long battery life/ and being able to change discs. ideal! except...

it switches on ok and all the usual stuff/ recognises blank discs etc. but i have tried on a laptop and pc using sonicstage 3.4/ 4. and simple burner under xp and 98se, with not much luck. the behaviour is this with sonicstage i try to get an albums worth of music on it but only the first file can but transfered... at some point after that first file the "pc-md" icon is not on the md then a long pause then it tells me it couldn't transfer the others... i have tried this over and over and got the same results. i am taking it back on the advice given here or not. my first port of call would have been some alcohol on the record head... i don't have a long time to search through this forum. time is of the essance. thanks.

hi,

the cable was not designed for the sony unit, it came with a card reader... but i'm assuming usb is usb? it was new and i know it works... the 2 two pc's are totally different in usb make... i can't vouch for the unit, i was told it works. interesting to note it will play back the song it records to the device. i was wondering if it was a media problem. i would have put it down to this had it been a cdrw or so... the media is tdk branded. but i assume on md's theres only one type of media and it should be compatible? thanks.

hi,

yeah that was a good idea, i read that in the manual. i didn't get it with an official sony adaptor. after trying for a while on batteries i improvised with a gameboy color adaptor same plug 3v and it has worked fine on that... but it didn't solve the problem with transfering more than one file...

hi,

i don't know who might sell a minidisc locally but it might be worth getting one from a shop to alay my fears for sure. while i have just got 5 brand new wrapped discs off ebay i can't vouch for them, left somewhere too hot or too cold??? mmm...

i also tried realplayer as transfer software seeing a tip on the net, but it's the same situation.

I don't know your location but if you are in the US you may be able to find some 5 pack sony blanks at wal-mart if your local store has not cleared them out already. They are going for $3.

i have 2 mz-n510 units. both of them are awesome! they work perfect! i was wondering if your using an old computer? maybe you caould try to convert the songs first then transfer them all at once after you convert them. i was also wondering what sonic stage version you are using? if its not at least version 2.3 then upgrade to version 4.0 from this website. how fast is your computer?

i did convert them first... software as mentioned 3.4 and 4.0 on a p3 800mhz laptop and an athlon 3200+... i don't see why those computers wouldn't be up to the job... i even uninstalled my antivirus software/ firewall. i see the sony site says they don't support a multiboot computer, and they are both that with "bootitng." perhaps thats the problem? i could try and install just the os. but i'm dealing with other items from ebay... i will try and get another brand new minidisc. (i did buy 5 new ones... mmm...) and also i'll see if i can borrow a minidisc from someone. but when i get the other stuff done i shall return this if it won't do the job as i know have a 2gb mp3 and a minicd mp3... only short on battery life! i used to have to have big pockets in my coat for my big mp3 cd player and i've had 2 flash drives give up on me... it was a tossup on the minicd or minidisc. minidisc had it on battery life... but mini mp3 cd has the drag and drop convenience. i would have kept both but if it don't work...

thanks anyway.

oh well looks like i have got to keep it i told the seller it was ok after getting 7 songs on it (and thinking it is just buggy software.) but i spoke too soon... i have not been able to get anymore songs on it as it pauses for ages and i can hear the disk spinning up and down. with nothing on the lcd. on the positive side i would have been happy with it as lp4 is still a good sounding file and small size. i think i'll see if i can get another to burn the minidisc as this seems to play ok and use this for just listening... B)
