Sound Quality: ATRAC3plus over Mp3?

Rate this question

Matt

Question

There are obvious benifits of using Atrac3Plus over MP3 on my NW-HD3 e.g. better battery life.

I am planning on converting my MP3 collection that are at various bit rates into Atrac3Plus (256k).

But I have a question before I convert them:

Would converting my MP3's into Atrac3Plus result in poorer sound quailty?

They are all at various bit rates ranging from 192k all the way up to 320k, some being VBR and some being CBR.

Are you sure it results in poorer sound quality? Does this not only apply when converting MP3 to MP3?

Anyway that was a very fast reply thanks!

Matt

I `m sure about that .If you Convert Your Mp3(192kpbs) files to Atrac3 Plus (192kpbs ).Then Listen to Atrac192kpbs you will see that there is a little Detoriation in Sound Quality .This Also Appiles to Mp3 to Mp3 conversion or Atrac to Mp3 .

Like if you Convert your Mp3 192kpbs file to Atrac3 plus 256kpbs then you will not get Better sound quality .

Also Remember one thing Always keep(Back up) your original files .

Just Because of Better battery Life I have converted around 50 of my Mp3 192kpbs files to Atrac3 192kpbs Files .

Thanks for your speedy reply Stuge.

Is the soud quailty detoriation noticable as in is it major? or only slight? I mean would it be worth transferring my MP3's to Atrac3Plus for the extra baterry life. If its only slight then there isnt a problem.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

why don't you try it out your self, because the terms "slight, major etc." sure are very sujective.

Some guys don't notice any difference at all whereas I e.g. always need the highest bitrates and even rather listen to CDs....

Convert one of your favorite songs - copy both versions (MP3, Atrac) to your player and listen to both of them as often as you want to.

Then you should be able to notice if the changed quality bothers you.................

Matt,

There is only Slight Difference But it also depends on your headphones as well Better is the Headphone more difference you can judge between both the Files .

In general You will not find the much difference between those two files ..

But As Doerthe says Convert one of your fav or any mp3 file to Atrac ..& Then Listen to both of them .

The only "obvious" benefit of battery life will only be realized if you use low bitrate Atrac. Atrac3+ 256kbps still uses plenty of juice. The HD3 plays MP3 just fine, so there is no point converting your MP3s.

If you still insist in converting to Atrac, it would be more logical to convert your MP3s to Atrac3 132kbps or Atrac3+ 64kbps, therefore giving you better battery life than Atrac3+ 256kbps. Drawback is the loss of sound quality is even greater. Still, if you're transcoding from high bitrate MP3s, the reduction in quality might not be that noticable.

Is it just me, or is there an increasing number of questions regarding transcoding MP3s to Atrac? In the past, many people complained about Sony not supporting MP3 and having to convert to Atrac. Now that Sony devices supports MP3 natively, many want to transcode to Atrac. Oh the irony.
