Is the RM-MC40ELK Compatible with Older Non-HI-MD Players?

Works on the MZ-E900. The only thing that doesn't work is the jog wheel. Pressing the jog wheel in (which enters the menu on Hi-MD units) serves as Play/Pause for the MZ-E900, but scrolling the jog wheel up or down has no effect. All of the other buttons/functions seem to work though.

Also works with the E720. Like raintheory, scrolling with the jog wheel does nothing. But, pressing the jog wheel does something different. For example, if you're on track 2, pressing takes you to track 1. Pressing it again takes you to the last track. Basically, pressing flipflops you between the 1st/last track. The 3-line display works (shows track number, album, song), but again, you can't wheel-scroll through the songs. All play modes and sound options work. Even the little walkman animation upon start-up is shown.

I'd try it with my E35, but it'll cost you... :)

Or, a thank you for bob, raintheory, and me will do.

Ok, thanks for adding to the knowledge on this forum to bob, raintheory and jaylen for spreading knowledge on cobatibility between Sony reomtes and Minidisc players :D

I was just playing around with you (and stalling for the E35/40ELK test because I went to afternoon Happy Hour, which led into night Happier Hour), but nice to see you have a sense of humor.

So I tried it, and well, for the most part, it works. Here's the weird stuff:

  • backlight, no
  • scrolling with jog wheel = nothing
  • pressing jog dial = pause
  • "play button" = nothing, but to play a track, pressing volume, "sound," or RR/FF works
  • "sound" button = FF one song at a time
  • 3-line display, no; only shows track number + (album OR song OR counter) and pressing "display" shuffles through those 3 choices
  • all play modes (repeat, shuffle, repeat 1), volume and stop buttons, and battery meter work
  • the text font is HUGE; I would've taken a pic, but my camera is being borrowed right now; think of a very large and spaced-out version of Times New Roman; in fact, the display text is much bigger than the white "Sony" at the top of the remote's LCD

With all these quirks, it seems like the 40ELK works best with MDLP units and newer, but workable with SP-only units, if you can deal with the list above.
