Beyer66
why wont sony support napster downloaded tracks for converting to atrac?I Bought a bunch of tracks from napster (before i got the MD)and when i try to transfer them to the HI-MD, it doesnt work. (says transfer not allowed)is there a way around this?i know that sony can be a pain with copyright issues, etc.. so why wont they let me transfer a song that was actually PAID for???? jillako
Unfortunately, its the state of DRM these days. You can't really convert DRM-ed music from one format to another. Can't really fault Sony, there is no easy way to do this. You'll run into the same predicament when trying to switch from iTunes to another platform, or Sony's Connect to another platform. The only legal way to transfer your music would be to burn to an audio CD and rip it again into your desired format. Not desirable, but it works. If you are willing to tread the legal barb wire, search the Internets for FairUse4WM
Beyer66
but i even tried to get the music onto another computer with a cd i burned, and once i brought the songs back here, (after saving them onto my HI-MD from the other PC) it still didnt work. the files must be encoded with some sort of codec (is that the proper term?) or something because even when attempting to play them with windows media player, i get a pop up for licence aquisition through napster. what a crock. i guess i could record them analog off the cd, or would optical recording work from a cd player? i probably wont go through the trouble over a few songs, but its just annoying
jillako
Beyer66, I am not sure I get what you did. I suspect you may be trying to burn a data cd, as opposed to an audio cd. Burn an audio cd of your songs, a cd that will play in a regular CD player. Then you should be able to rip the music just like any other store-bought cd. A440
You need to convert the .wma files (if that's what they are, or whatever they are) to .wav files, which are what standalone CD players will play. Possibly you just copied the .wma files to a CD, which doesn't change them. Napster probably has a setting like Burn Audio CD, which will do that conversion. .Wav files don't have any digital rights information, just the music.
