necrotoxico
I’m owner of a beautiful mz nh700 and I just love itBut now I want something new.At first I was going blind for an Rh1 just because it looks like something you must have after an nh700 . In the past I have been an ipod hater just for being an apple product but some doubts attack me on the way. Reading posts and some very light player comparisons. The facts to keep in mind for helping me to decide are:1- The most important of all to me is sound quality- Some users say ipod have a better sound quality and to my amusement this was said by advanced md users of this very forum . So one more reason to feed my painful doubts.-The phones for my next player are going to be er6i or something in that level2- The use I have given to my actual hi-md has been just for playing my music and never for a serious recording (just testing when bored)3- The knowledge I have about ipod is equal to cero (just once I had one in my hands for about 1 minute)-Don’t know for sure the number of the last ipod generation... some store in here are saying they sell a 6gen 30 GB ipod but think they are wrong. -if ipod is the way to go I think 30 GB is the right for me.. But don’t know the gen number to buy and I’m afraid to get a dog by a cat. And is there a way to easily recognize the generation of an ipod.. I mean is written in the box or something4- The amount of my total music collection is not precisely huge and I tend to listen just one artist for about a month or less before changing it to the next5- I know ipod can reproduce videos but this is not important to me.. Just concern about sound quality and on a second place it sound nice to have some extra space to put music on6- I put the player on a heavy daily use.. Something like 5 hours a day 365 days per yearAfter saying all that I ask for help on deciding the right player for me….. and I really mean it (I fell Lost)Thanks in advanceadded 22-11-2006 :Another important thing I just read aboutIpod don’t have custom EQ…… what about that?….. Are presets enough to fit the ears of exquisite users? I mean you are on a complete mercy of presets Edited November 23, 2006 by necrotoxico
pata2001
1. Can you really tell any difference of sound quality? Let's face it, most claims about sound quality are highly subjective. I wouldn't worry about the SQ on the iPod, unless you like to use EQ. EQ on the iPod is still not up to par, and no custom EQ. iPods have line-out through the dock connector, although you have to use a dock or an adaptor to utilize it.2. iPod can do gapless with MP3 and AAC, and unicode. iTunes is an excellent jukebox software, and nothing beats its smart playlist feature.3. There are no 6G iPods yet. Current iPods are 5.5G. iPod nano is on the 2nd gen.Check my reviews on 2G nano and 5G iPod:http://www.audiotstation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32099http://www.audiotstation.com/forum/showthr...age=3&pp=10http://www.audiotstation.com/forum/showthr...age=5&pp=10http://www.audiotstation.com/forum/showthr...age=6&pp=10Current best bang for the buck is the 80GB iPod for $349, just $100 more from the 30GB version. Or, you can go with the 8GB flash based 2G nano.4. Another reason to use iTunes. Smart playlist will be your best friend. You can set smart playlist to cycle your songs automatically.5. Yeah, video is just a gimmick, although pretty nice when you need to show off. however, for real video playback, get the Cowon A2.6. 80GB version has better battery life than 30GB version. 2G nano have 24 hour rated battery life, and is flash based so it's more reliable than the hard-drive iPods if you are on the go.My take: if you really want an iPod today, get the 2G nano, and wait for the real 6G iPod/video iPod to show up next year. jaylen
I don't want to tell you which one to get. I'll leave that task to the others - LOL. I use an iPod (5G, 60GB - got it as a gift so I didn't really choose) and MD/Hi-MD and I'm happy with both for sound quality; each has its own "bad" points. But, I can help you out with the basic iPod info. You can look here for the iPod generations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod. It gives the components of each generation and some very helpful pictures of each unit, their capacities, and their release dates (at the bottom). The 6th generation iPod isn't out yet, although there have been a lot of articles on the "fake" 6G that had a touchscreen. It won't tell you the iPod generation on the box (at least mine didn't or I didn't notice it); you just have to know what they look like and what they can do. Also, if you're looking to save a little money, some people purchase refurbished iPods from the Apple website. From what the people with iPod refurbs have said, they're pretty much in new condition (e.g., the covers are new and scratch-free).You could also go with other players out there like the iAudio X5/X5L or Creative if you're still anti-Apple.Again, I'm not pushing you to the iPod (or the RH1). Just helping out so that your iPod knowledge goes from zero to more-than-zero. I think when shopping for electronics, it's good to be in-the-know about things and not base a purchase on what's popular or what someone else thinks is awesome. Afterall, it is going to be YOUR player. And, for reference, I've been using the iPod more because of convenience during the hectic school year. Good luck! mdmania
the good thing about the iPod right now is that there is a open source like Rockbox that you can actually change the OS in it. I have a 4gen iPod and I use this more often for listening purposes because Rockbox offer two feature that I mostly prepared when listening to music. These two features are Crossfade and Bookmarking which iPod do not offer with their OS. But then I also prefer RH1 because I already have existing Legacy MD that I would like to transfer to PC. Also, I like the fact that it makes life easier for me when I have to transfer from tape to MD to PC and edit to splice 1 long track. I have that capability. So it all going to matter of how you really want to apply each technology. I just happen to have both. Sorry if I was not any help at all or maybe??? pata2001
Congrats on your new purchase. Just remember that your iPod has a hard-drive in it, so be nice with it. Try not to shake it a lot/changing tracks while jogging, etc. Another tip: if you use WAV or apple lossless, expect less battery life than what Apple claimed.
