just a quick warning;; but;; most of the receivers i've seen with Optical out were limited;; that is;; like,, maybe ONLY the CD in can go THRU to the Optical output;; but not other signals..

i wasn't sure if the FM stations could;; but look into EXACTLY what comes out of that Optical out..

IMO;; i wouldn't do it the way you want to..

maybe i'm right;; maybe i'm wrong;; or maybe you should just be cautious..

Thanks for the advice guys. Rayzray, you said that in your opinion, you wouldn't do it (that is, back up a record by recording it to MD with an optical toslink connection through a receiver) that way. What way would you suggest? I'm new to using the MD as a recording device (previously just used it as portable audio playback) and am eager to explore new ways to get the most out of MD. Any insight would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

i hook my turntable to a DJ mixer which has a phono input,, and take it's audio out into my MD decks.. that's good for me..

when i DJ'd;; the audio quality was great..

i also can take that audio out (optical) from the MD-Deck and route it to the PC's optical in if i wish to use Sonic Stage to take out the pops;; but if a vinyl is that bad;; i don't even bother to record it..

you can buy a cheap DJ mixer at Radio Shack;; and hey,, i even think that i saw one at the Guitar Center that had an Optical out!! but don't quote me on that..

you can also JUST buy a Phono to analog box which would take the Turntable in and have an analog line out without the mixer;; don't know what they call them,, never had one..
