Gurus, wizards and pros - I am looking to buy a sturdy mic stand than can fold into nothing and is under ~US$100. I can see I will need this to do recording in the future. Just to get above the crowd noise it is a must. So, if you can, please fill me in.

You could start with musicians' stores, like http://www.guitarcenter.com , http://www.musiciansfriend.com , http://www.sweetwater.com, http://www.zzounds.com , etc. , though they may be more on the sturdy side than the collapsible side.

Photo equipment stores might also have something more portable to hold lights, like this (courtesy "collapsible microphone stand" from Google):

Also from Google, this might be just your baby:

Depending on how small your mics are, you could also rig something up with anything that telescopes and extends: a car radio antenna, a pointer, etc.

Perfect A - Were it not that other folks might learn from our dialog, it would be easier to write you directly. ;o) Thanks, again, for the leg up.

A440, et al, I checked the pages suggested on the Internet and got an idea of what to expect and prices. Then I walked around downtown (ha!) Astoria finding an ancient chrome one with an ancient ElectroVoice mic for $300, a ragged used one in a ragged music store for ~$20, a combo stand and boom arm in RadioShack for $45 and next door in the "best music store in town" a good tripod stand with boom for $30. Bought it. I am ready now and have shortened my list of excuses for a bad recording by one. Thanks for the pointers and help. It made it possible to scoop up a buy here and be sure it was a buy. B)

I use a Bogen Manfroto light stand (i bought it at a photo/ camera store)

its aluminum it weighs a couple pounds

is 3' long when colapsed

will get you 9' up there

the tripod is 3' wide

is was 50 bux, ther was a taller one that was 70

the post has a 1/4" 20 thread just get a wing nut for it and make somethign to adapt your mounts

i'll post a pic when i get to my other computer

oh and i use a pair of Rode NT3s they are kinda heavy for mics (battery in the body) and it holds them fairly steddy unless someone kicks the tripod

Thanks for the help. Yeah, "unless someone kicks the tripod." They are a special breed with size 14 feet who lurch around live music more than any other place. ;o)
