boojum
Gurus, wizards and pros - I am looking to buy a sturdy mic stand than can fold into nothing and is under ~US$100. I can see I will need this to do recording in the future. Just to get above the crowd noise it is a must. So, if you can, please fill me in. A440
You could start with musicians' stores, like http://www.guitarcenter.com , http://www.musiciansfriend.com , http://www.sweetwater.com, http://www.zzounds.com , etc. , though they may be more on the sturdy side than the collapsible side. Photo equipment stores might also have something more portable to hold lights, like this (courtesy "collapsible microphone stand" from Google): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller...5602&is=REGAlso from Google, this might be just your baby:http://www.audioimplements.com/mic%20stand%20page.htmDepending on how small your mics are, you could also rig something up with anything that telescopes and extends: a car radio antenna, a pointer, etc. Edited January 16, 2007 by A440

boojum
A440, et al, I checked the pages suggested on the Internet and got an idea of what to expect and prices. Then I walked around downtown (ha!) Astoria finding an ancient chrome one with an ancient ElectroVoice mic for $300, a ragged used one in a ragged music store for ~$20, a combo stand and boom arm in RadioShack for $45 and next door in the "best music store in town" a good tripod stand with boom for $30. Bought it. I am ready now and have shortened my list of excuses for a bad recording by one. Thanks for the pointers and help. It made it possible to scoop up a buy here and be sure it was a buy. If you could post a recording of those Rode NT3s to the Gallery, a lot of people would love to hear it.

Yeah, "unless someone kicks the tripod." They are a special breed with size 14 feet who lurch around live music more than any other place. ;o)
