Hi--

I'm new to minidiscing as I just got an old Sony MZ-R55 from a friend. I have no idea what to do with it past the recording part and am trying to figure out how to transfer my recorded tracks to CD. I assume I need a cable to connect to my computer, but I don't know what kind. Then, which software would be best? I have a MAC. Sorry if these are basic questions, but this entire site confuses me since I'm not up on the terminology. Thanks!

Hi backlight19,

Your unit is pretty old, so it lacks USB connectivity. Therefore, the only way to transfer files is analog and in real time. This means you'll need a male-male 3.5mm stereo connector. Connect it to the line out of minidisc player and the line in on your soundcard.

I'm not too familiar with the mac, but I think Garageband probably allows you to record from your line in, and it's packaged with macs. If it can't you can use the freeware program Audacity to record and do some mild editing.

Once you've saved/mastered your wavs, you can use toast to burn it to disc.

I hope this has answered your questions.

Hey Backlight , I am on a Mac book , Stereo to Stereo 1/8 cable , and Audacity , also download the LAME MP3encoder to install to Audacity(Check my profile an e-mail me I will guide you thru it , SKYPE , MSN Messenger , iChat your choice.)

I like the R55 too , its a good unit. You do have Manual rec level control you know. Hold the Rec button in for a couple of seconds while paused , and the rec menu will come up .
