hi all

i got my mic capsules this morning. went to maplin electronics shop the other day and was completely overwhelmed by all the odds and ends!. i wasn't sure on what i was looking for - there was so much stuff. the staff didn't seem to informative either.

would anyone be willing to take the time and search on http://www.maplin.co.uk for the components needed (as listed by greenmachine) and then post the links?. i would really appreciate it

many thanks

Alex

there's some info in this thread:

http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=11254

relating to maplin code numbers i think... at least, i managed to get the stuff somehow after reading it. see http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&am...ost&p=98819

i too saw a battery case and was thinking whether that could be used instead - seems so right?. would that mean i don't need to fanny about with putting together a battery box with the capacitors/resistors etc?. im looking at this one here:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Module...ox&doy=10m5

im still a little confused with the components. i will make another attempt to find what i need on the maplin website...any help would REALLY be appreciated

Alex

i have found the below so far (are they the right ones?):

angled stereo plug:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=...84&doy=10m5

heat shrinkable tubing: (i have to check which one i need for the panasonic wm-61a capsules)

http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?Module...01&doy=10m5

battery box:

2.2uF capacitors: Axial Electrolytic Capacitors, GenElect 2.2uF 100V

http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?pctitl...amp;classtype=M

resistors: im having trouble figuring out which ones i need - can anyone help please:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criter...rce=15&SD=Y

stereo jacks: (various)

http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?MenuNo...=y&doy=10m5

stereo connectors: when i type this in it takes me to 'stereo jacks' - are they the same?

that ain't gonna help you much, you still need to attach the battery to the rest of the circuit and then put the whole lot in a suitable box.

>> angled stereo plug: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=...84&doy=10m5

looks good. when yo uget to maplins they'll have a row of different plugs and you may or may not find that exact one, but as long as it's stereo and 3.5mm you're good to go.

>> 2.2uF capacitors: Axial Electrolytic Capacitors, GenElect 2.2uF 100V http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?pctitl...amp;classtype=M

i think any 2.2uF's will do, just get whatever they have / whatever's cheapest.

>> resistors: im having trouble figuring out which ones i need - can anyone help please:

i think i got these ones, though again i think any 10 kOhm one's will do.

i think the connector would be something like this:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Module...et&doy=10m5

also, a box like this or something similar (about the size of half your hand) should be good.

when it says a number and then K, is that referring to Kohms? im guessing so but want to make sure. i wouldnt want to make an order for the wrong components!

does it matter what voltage capacitors i get as long as they are 2.2uf? - ive found some that are 50v, 63v and 100v. i was thinking of getting a selection just in case but if someone could confirm which ones i need for sure then i will stick to those ones

as you're only connecting a 9v battery to them i don't suppose it matters, not that i really know how this stuff works either... i think i got the 63v ones.

The voltage rating doesn't really make a difference as long as it's above the battery voltage (9V). Capacitors with higher voltage ratings tend to be larger physically(not so good if you aim for miniaturization). 2.2uF will give a (6dB/oct.) roll-off just below the threshold of hearing (20Hz). When using smaller caps, the roll-off may be audible (above 20Hz). The capacitor is used to prevent DC battery voltage entering the recorder's input jacks.

many thanks...

greenmachine, could i ask you to help me out please?...

...would you mind, if time allows, taken a look at maplin.co.uk and pointing out exactly what components are needed. i have now figured out the capacitors...

thanks

Alex
