Hi-MD / SonicStage Multiple PC Imports?

Hi,

I have a bunch of HiMD discs containing only recordings I made with microphone direct into my MZ-NHF800. I'm not 100% familiar with Sonic Stage, but I am wondering how many times I can import the discs to different installs of Sonic Stage on different computers? I want to be able to;

* Copy recordings from the discs onto my laptop.

* Post the discs home (I'm travelling at the moment).

* Have those same discs imported onto a desktop computer with it's own separate install of Sonic Stage.

Is this possible, or are there some kind of copy restrictions placed on a disc once it copies to a computer? Normally I wouldn't even consider this, but I know Sony can be extreme with their restrictions. Thanks,

Dave.

Hopefully I'm not wrong, but I think with 3.4 and up there are no restrictions, best way is to try it and see, SS isn't like w*****s, that you can only use your copy on one puter.

Good luck, and let us know how it works out.

Bob.

BTW

If you have SS on all you puters, wouldn't it be easier to manage it using MD's?

Not too sure what you mean there.. the thing is I'll be carrying a laptop around with me, so I want to copy MDs onto it, and then post those MDs home (overseas) for safe keeping. I won't be home for at least another year or so, and say if my laptop was lost/stolen in that time, it would be a real shame if somehow those discs that copied onto the laptop were found to be unreadable on a desktop machine at home with SS. I'll have to see how it goes.

Just make sure you have SonicStage 3.2 or above--possibly more current than the one that came with your unit.

(Look in Downloads, link on upper right. Or search the forums for 3.4 and installer.)

You can upload the same disc as many times as you want with SonicStage 3.2 and later. The least glitchy versions, unless you need Vista, are 3.4 and 4.2. Earlier versions of SonicStage would only let you upload once, and if you have uploaded with those old versions you can't re-upload those discs with any version. But Sony removed that restriction after an angry mob carrying torches marched on Sony headquarters.

Once you have uploaded the files to My Library in SonicStage, you can make portable copies of the uploaded files by using File Conversion Tool, under Tools in SonicStage. Uncheck "Add Copy Protection" (as if...) and run the conversion tool. It may take a while, and as with any SonicStage operation, you should make sure the process is not interrupted until you hear the stupid little ding-ding sound. Then you can copy the unlocked .oma files (from a folder called Packages, unless you changed the default) onto CD or DVD. Any SonicStage--not just your original installation--should be able to play back those files.

---------------

Should you need it, this is a link to a copy of the full 3.4 installer disc that came with the MZ-RH1. It's more than 200 MB, so don't even think about it on dialup.

You'll need Nero or another burning program to convert the ISO to an installation CD.

There are smaller installers available in Downloads.

If you record in PCM, don't bother with Sony's proprietary format, but upload (with SonicStage), convert to .wav format and compress that lossless with .flac or a similar compression scheme. Use this file for archiving and/or transferring. After that, the backup copy in SonicStage's Library in uncompressed proprietary format can be deleted to free up disc space.
