Does anyone know a bona fide program that converts iTunes files to .mp3? An old version of iTunes used to allow you to save iTunes songs as .mp3 files but new versions stopped allowing that. Anyone have any ideas here? Thanks!

JM

Switch from NCH , it's a freebie

http://www.nch.com.au/switch/plus.html

"Plus" you have to pay for but Switch basic is free and works good , both Mac and Windoze flavored

I am on a Mac , and have the latest iTunes with iPhone support , When you go to preferences , klik the advanced tab , then choose the importing tab , you will see a dropdown and MP3 is among the choices with variable bitrates . So recheck your settings.

When you get software from NCH, it offers you a whole bundle of extra stuff you don't need. Uncheck them and don't download or install them, unless you like being nagged a few weeks later to register everything that's not freeware.

Switch is the one prog that doesnt do so much of that , I have used it for years , yes it will ask you to by Plus , but after you configure the preferences there are no more nags.

Plus at 772 kb its the lightest download for a converter

update , I just two minutes ago downloaded the 1.13 Switch for Mac , and there is absolutely NO nag in it whatsoever , there are however , links to each program under the help menu . plus they have added command line controls for windoze users , a new GUI ( looks nice to) very straightforward options , and conversion formats galore

ahhh m4p , I miss read , it does m4a just fine

I converted Andreas Vollenveider from m4a , to mp3 yesterday for my (Very old 128 mb) mp3 player

why did you convert to m4p in the first place ? just curious

I'm probably not as tech-savvy as most of the others on this forum, but I'm guessing I was a little too quick to convert to the new version of iTunes awhile back. When it says "there's a new version...would you like to download now?" I've always figured, "hey, new version can't be worse than the current..." Yeah, dumb like that. SO, I never actually MEANT to covert to .m4p, nor did I intentionally convert anything. iTunes doesn't appear to have converted any files that used to be something else. However, anything downloaded in the past few months is .mp4, so I'm out of luck.

Anyway, if there's any way I can covert these, please let me know. Thanks a bunch! JM

Go to preferenes iniTunes , klik Advanced , then you see " General, Importing and Burning " three buttons.

To directly get mp3 ( I know this is an odd way ) but select in the Burning prefs MP3 CD , then close and restart iTunes , find the songs you want make a Playlist with those songs , and burn them to cd as MP3's , then from the CD you can drag them straight to your mp3 player
