I've been lurking here (on and off) since 2000ish, but have finally registered myself so, hello! :hi:

Reason for posting is I just got myself an Onkyo MD-105FX (had a birthday recently so that was my excuse!)

I've decided to keep hold of my iPod (sorry!) for downloaded MP3 transfers, and use the Onkyo as a replacement CD player (as there isn't one in my rack any more). I now rip CDs to Hi-MDs (on my MZ-RH10 or MZ-RH1) and file the CDs away in storage, giving me just one drawer for all my music. I believe Minidisc and MP3 players *can* co-exist, especially if you value good quality audio (of MD).

Perhaps of interest, I've got my 105FX connected (with the RI cable) to my (newly released in the UK) Onkyo TX-SR605 AV amp and they play together perfectly. Auto power on, direct change, "MD" input display and full remote control from the amp remote. Its really good to see at least one manufacturer releasing new products that continue to support Hi-MD decks. :D

Harry.

Very cool. Thanks for that. I imported a MD-105FX from Japan almost two years ago, and have been wondering if it would integrate via the RI port with other Onkyo components found here in North America. I'm planning to pick up an Onkyo receiver and CD player next year, and now I know that what I want to with them should work. Cheers.

Off-topic: Speaking of the iPod and the Onkyo RI system, have you had any experience with the Onkyo RI dock for iPod? Just curious...

Hi Feeder,

A couple of questions for you:

Firstly, I record a lot of radio programmes on my Sony Deck (JB940) while I'm out at work, by plugging it into an electronic timer. Is there any way of doing this (a) if I bought the Onkyo Hi-MD deck on its own and plugged it into my existing Hi-Fi system; or (b ) if I bought both units.

Secondly, as I see you're also in the UK, can you tell us how much you paid for the equipment and did you buy it in the UK?

Hi Belletristik, no I haven't tried the iPod dock yet, but thats next on my list of wants! I believe both an Onkyo HiMD and iPod can be connected to the SR605 together (as the dock can be assigned an alternative amp input via a switch on its underside). I don't really have a need for it as my Media Centre PC is hooked up to my TV via the amp anyway (for iTunes etc).

Hungerdunger, the 105FX doesn't have the "timer" switch as on most Sony MD decks, and it can't be set to timer-record on its own either unfortunately. The amp has an RDS FM tuner, but I can't find any info in the instructions to allow timer recording (even though you can set the time on the amp...) I bought the 105FX from AudioCubes2, they supply a voltage converter free, (and as the UK-USA exchange rate is good at the mo) paid 250UKP for it, although it did get spotted at customs and I had to pay nearly 50UKP in duty, its always a gamble and I got caught out this time. The amp's widely available now in the UK (in silver or black I believe) and average price is 400UKP or less. I'm about to PM you with an alternative (DAB) option, just finding the links... ;)
