MZ-RH1 noise while recording

Hi all,

I'm a bit let down. When I first tried to record something on my brand new minidisc there was some kind of mechanical noise (listen to the attached mp3). It varies a bit according to how you hold it. Is this normal???

Nils

it sounds like it was coming moe from one side , What cable or input wee you using , was the cable completely in , is the Cable bad (test with a meter )

it souds like a "ground fault " . In electrical terms , it is where a DC biased signal gets looped thru the Ground or Earth , back into the Positive side or the Audio path .

If you try linking two pieces of certain audio gear together with the same power supply , and audio path , a ground loop will result , and can be bad enough to actually damage the equipment.

Example . an Older BOSS RPQ 10 Preamp / Parametric EQ , has on the back a DC in , and a DC out . So I set my MicroBR right on top and conected the DC

Extension and audio cables to see if it would work . The EQ shut down , Signal died and tried to protect itself, and made almost exactly the same noise as your mp3.

Just fill us in with how you had the RH1 setup when you recorded.

This may be a hugely amplified sound of the overwrite head operating. Wasn't the mic actually set on top of the unit while recording?

I should have made it clear that the mp3 is just an example of how it sounds. I placed the mic close to the unit and then normalised the audio file afterwards. What I want to know is: does it make a noise while recording? It's a very irritating noise. Enough to draw everyones attention in a quiet room. I can't have it like that.

It makes the same noise if you transfer files from the computer to the player. Also the sound comes and goes when recording for a longer time.

To me it sounds as if something is loose and vibrating.

It does make noise. It is spinning the disc inside that gets written to when recording and read when uploading. All minidisc units do that.

In most recording situations, with the mic a foot or two away from the unit, the noise is negligible. The noise doesn't matter at all when uploading. But if you are recording in such quiet conditions that it is bothersome you could:

1) swaddle the unit in something soft and sound-absorbing or

2) get a flash recorder with no moving parts: Edirol R09, Microtrack M-Audio, Zoom H2 .

There should be lots of takers for the RH1 if you can't return it.

Thanks for the reply.

It doesn't make any noise like this when just playing/uploading. I can't remember my old MZ-R50 doing any noise at all.

I've looked at the zoom h2. Maybe it would suit my needs better...
