I've got a Yamaha MD-8 in the cupboard which is now of no practical use (I have a Korg D888) but can't quite bring myself to throw it out (or sell it). Why one gets that kind of sentimental attachment to gear I don't know. Maybe the memory of what it cost and how little it actually got used.... I did record a big band CD on it though. Not a bad piece of gear but hopelessly outdated now (18 mins running time per disk!!)

See http://www.studiotrax.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=160 if you haven't already! Most of my thoughts have already been expressed there, I think. Much debate there over the mic preamps - the trim control has most of the gain in the very last part of the scale, but in practice with real music, the "3 o'clock" position or thereabouts is actually fine, at least with my mics.

The Orchestral sample on the Naiant mics site was recorded with a D888 through its own preamps.

Well I read the thread about the trim controls , and I think that kills it for me .

The layout is nice , but weak mic pre's wont do it.

Is there any physical difference between MD Data and regular discs? Not by the cartridge design but physical layering in the platter..

Just pondering - a few years back, someone transplanted a HiMD platter into a regular 60/74/80min cartridge, for aesthetic purposes.. :)

Yes there is a difference , and they are formatted differently as well .
