hrider
Any comparisons with other portable recorders : PCM-D50, Zoom H2/H4, Edirol R-09 . . . .? comments . . . .? . have owned MZ-1 & MZ-2P from the beginning . . . want to upload originally recorded MD to old Mac & new one forthcoming . . ..is using optical spdf via Fostex connector via Audiamedia III card installation best way to transfer original MD recordings from my rock band circa 1995 the way to go?? Your thoughts .. . Greatly appreciated since I realize I must move on, technology speaking . ... Greatly appreciated & Tanks . .. my friend & a former owner of MD recorders is strongly suggesting I purchase the Zoom H2-but I have always trusted Sony workmanship (my portables still work even if their marketing stinks!) and the Zoom-Edirol type units seem too much like toys & are too cheaply made . . .? Tanks again!-Hrideman
Strungup
I have the Zoom H2 , The Rh1 , and a buttload of other gear , I am also on a Mac The RH1 works fine with OSX 10.4+ Intel and the audio quality is , well, Sony nuff said . The Zoom is cool , but....... Ideas and basics sure , but not for the Stellar final product I use my Zoom for making Guitar lessons , it has a Metronome in it that is pretty cool , and a Monitoring feature so that you can record ,say, a rythym part , then play it back and play the lead lines or Harmony parts and hear both (The Mics stay on ) The Zoom is incredibly usefull for stuff like that , And the Line input is very clean , so If you wanted to go from MD ->Zoom -> Computer upload ,that would work well . The Mics on the Zoom leave a little to be desired , especially if your used to using really nice mics with an MD . My RH1 stays connected to an Audio Technica AT822 the Zoom just doesn't go there .The PCM D50 , Wow what a machine , the more I research it the more I want it , it has a mic pre in it that is at least as good if not better than the MD's which says a lot . Plus a Limiter added before the A/D converter and smooth live Rec controls . And that Sony Sound . Cant go wrong there. But I will agree , if your a guitarist , you should have the Zoom in the bag , along with a Line6 Pocket Pod , what a way to practice !!!!! OH yeah ! If your a Recordist , Sony all the way and good mics . If your trying to be both , be very nice to the WIfe/Girlfreind/Mom etc , you know what I mean . A440
The MZ-M200 and the MZ-RH1 are the same unit. The M200 also includes a Sony DS70P microphone. Only that unit (RH1 or M200) will upload your old MD recordings digitally, and only to a PC running (free) SonicStage software. I don't think the vintage formats can be uploaded to a Mac. Recordings from your vintage units are in the original SP format and from what I have read here, they will upload slowly, perhaps only 2x or 3x. So you'd have to decide how much time you'd save by getting the RH1 vs. your optical and realtime playback. For a lot of recordings, it might be worth it--for a few, probably not. Then again, the RH1 is a great little recorder for future projects. New RH1 recordings, in the newer Hi-MD formats, can be uploaded to Mac as well as to PC--again, in an additional step through Sony software. The Zoom and Edirol do easier drag-and-drop uploading. Their built-in mics get mixed reviews, and their preamps are apparently not as impressive as the minidisc preamps, but you'd bypass those for any line-in recording, which should be high quality. The PCM-D50 does look more and more tempting. Never used one, but its price is now around $500 and as the MZ-RH1 gets scarcer, people are asking more than $300 for them ($400+ in the UK). If $500 is within your budget, and you want to use the built-in mics, that might well be your gadget. This blogger did a hands-on comparison of Zoom (H4, not H2) and PCM-D50. http://www.bradlinder.net/2007/10/sony-ann...held-flash.html
