Hi!

I am a french horn player in music school and am looking for a minidisc to record my lessons and solos so I can go back and listen, as well as send in recordings for auditions in CD format.

I've been recommended to the Sony MZ-RH 1 and MZ-NH 700, and as far as mics I've been recommended to the Sony ECM-MS907 or the Sony ECM-DS70P.

I'm not full of money, so I'd say $200 is my max. What should I do? Thanks for your help!!

The RH1 is the flagship model, which is an amazing machine. However, the only features specific to it are the ability to upload to PC minidiscs created with older recorders, and the ability to remember manual record levels.

That said... for what you intend to do with the unit, the NH700 would fit your needs nicely. You will almost certainly be able to acquire one second-hand for under $200.

As long as you are recording with a Hi-MD recorder (RH1 & NH700 are both Hi-MD, though there are a couple others), you will be able to upload your recordings to PC via USB. Be sure to use a recent version of SonicStage instead of the version that might come with your unit. I recommend SonicStage 4.2 for any OS besides Vista, which requires 4.3.

As far as microphones, sound professionals sells some decently priced stereo microphones. Check out their SP-BMC-2's: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-BMC-2 -Alternately, our own member greenmachine builds microphones and battery boxes. Although I am unsure if he is still offering them.

Have fun!

Well for lessons , (I am a guitar teacher ) I would have to say that the 200 will cover the Zoom H2 , but it wont cover the RH1 , and mic , I have both the H2 and the RH1 +several very nice mics , there is a difference in audio quality , but for your situation , the H2 will be the best bet .

Why :

  1. Built in Tuner for checking your Pitch ( as a Horn player you need that)
  2. Built in Metronome , that has a wide variety of settings( you monitor thru headphones)
  3. The ability to record in many formats , and upload straight to an email from the machine itself ( connects as an external drive, so you can uplaod straight from there to the email )
  4. Built in Mics , and a Mono Mix ability (self explanitory )
  5. a Limiter that functions moderately well , and has selectable settings
  6. fits in your pocket!

As I said the sound quality, wont be that of an RH1 (400 bucks) and an AT-822 (another 300)

but the H2 will be VERY usable for just what you want to do , Practice Music , Practice , Practice,Practice , and then go play some !

I am an MD loyalist , but purpose ,needs met by solution .......MD in this case is one solution , but not the correct one.
