Sony BMG Plans to Drop DRM

An interesting Business Week article details Sony's plans to start selling MP3s without copy-prevention measures. From the article: "The impetus to lift copyright protection represents a sea change for the recording industry, which for the better part of a decade has used DRM to guard against what it considers illegal distribution and duplication of songs purchased online. In abandoning DRM on à la carte song purchases, the labels could create a raft of new, less restrictive ways of selling music over the Internet, such as through social networks like Facebook and News Corp.'s (NWS) MySpace. Partnerships with retailers such as Amazon could also help the music industry take a swipe at Apple (AAPL), which has come to dominate the legal download market through a one-size-fits-all pricing scheme record labels find restrictive."

If only Sony had come to their senses about DRM 15 years ago, Minidisc might have had a very different place in history.

So true!

Even if they had provided options. For example a Minidisc that you could drag and drop non-drm content to via explorer, mp3 support, ability to upload your own recordings to computer without having to go via line out/in realtime methods.

Then if you wanted to purchase online then fair enough use atrac drm. Hell, even if they didn't have drag and drop support - with the other two options they would have atleast been competitive to ipod with the advantage in recorder models of the ability to make quality recordings and copy themn to the computer with ease. (Something ipod has never been able to do)

They really have no idea and learnt nothing from the beta/vhs war. It always surprises me that such a competent electronics manufacturer could allow themselves to be hobbled by marketing gurus. So sad!

NOW???

After they ditch us loyal MD/Hi-MD owners??? After they just closed the Connect Music Store??? That is indeed a slap in the face of every older MD/Hi-MD/Network/ATRAC CD Walkman owner (1992-2007)

Why not from the get-go (15 years ago) when they were still supporting MiniDisc and Hi-MD?? It would have made a huge difference back then. Sony really shot themselves in the foot...... again. At least they owe every MiniDisc and Hi-MD and other ATRAC Walkman owner an apology for this, now, are they going to be compatible with our equipment, or SonicStage (3.4 or higher)? I hope so. This will breathe new life into our gear (MD/Hi-MD/Network/ATRAC CD units) and open new doors that should have been open 15 years ago.

Oh, and one other question, can SonicStage (3.4 or higher, I own 4.2 CP myself) convert them from MP3 to our superior ATRAC format? And if so, how?

If they can be, my RH1/M200 all of a sudden has a new lease on life besides being strictly and uploader and part-time downloader to Hi-MD discs of music and data.

Just "Import" them. The problem is you are converting an already compressed file. So there are two stages of compression, and artifacts are likely to be introduced.

Why not buy the originals CDs and then transfer those? You can always buy or sell on ebay for good prices. Original source=quality.

I agree about Sony's stupidity. Maybe they get a kick out of investing millions into a project and then screwing up over and over again.

it's quite a joke, and the joke is on us. And after admitting proprietary standards kill their products, they still can't help themselves with blu-ray!
