THIS SUCKS
has anyone listened to the old lp2 105k codec? i tried it on a standard md reformatted to hi-md you get 6hrs 10 min on 1 disk and i was stunned to find out that it seems to actually sound better than standard lp2 132k. maybe the hi end is cut off sooner? does anyone remember how the freq. response is compared to lp2 132k? if you haven't tried it give it a shot you will be surprised. raintheory
I've used it in the past when trying to squeeze a bunch of tracks on a Hi-MD formatted disc... Mainly for travel/driving use, and it was quite good for that, a good middle-ground encoding.
ZosoIV
I always found 105kbps ("LP3") to be a bit too dull-sounding for my tastes, but otherwise, it's not bad when compared to a poorly-encoded MP3 at that bitrate. I'm not sure how LAME would sound in this range, using something like -V7 --vbr-new. Probably similar, actually.
Avrin
The high end of ATRAC3@105 kbit/s is cut off at 13.8 kHz (same as ATRAC3@66 kbit/s). In ATRAC3@132 kbit/s the highs are cut off at about 15.5 kHz.ATRAC3@105 kbit/s is actually quite good for portable listening. The way to directly rip to 105 and 66 kbit/s in SonicStage is described here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=15928 Edited March 12, 2008 by Avrin
