Hi -- This may be a lame question, and I apologize if it is......but can you use Hi-MD discs in older non-Hi-MD recorders? I used to be an avid recorder (environmental sounds) years ago, but have been away from MD for awhile, and just getting back into it, and need to purchase some discs (cannot afford a new recorder unortunately!). All the affordble discs I've come across are rated "Hi-MD", so I'm just wondering if these will work in my old Sharp 702.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Best,

No. Your old Sharp MD model only works with SP atrac. The Hi-MD format uses atrac3plus, a different format created in 2004.

Unless you use the Sonicstage program to heavily compress tracks to 'NetMD', which effectively fools the disc into thinking it is SP atrac.

Thanks for your input Kino170878. Much appreciated. Do you happen to know which Brand/Model of available discs would work for my player then?

Also, apologies for the multiple posts. Not sure how that happened. Maybe I pushed the button more than once (?).

Best!

Just use 74 or 80 minute discs and you will be ok.

Hi Greenmachine and Kino 170878. The discs I was thinking of using were the Sony MDW-80CL. They are 80 min discs. Package says they are "compatible with Hi MD". Will these work?

Thanks so much!
