Finally after years of waiting... since 2005, i've took the plunge in finally getting it through pricejapan for a $1080 shipped.

Yes the price is ridiculous but i couldnt resist.. and hey, on the bright side msrp started at over something like 110,000 yen...

This will be my first transaction with pricejapan and i'll keep things updated on my experience with them.

Excellent news. It looks like a fantastic model doesn't it, assuming you only intend to stick to legacy MD. Please tell us of your opinion once it arrives, I am particularly interested in the high speed transfer of MDs to the hard disc which supposedly can be anything up to 20x the speed of real time uploading. Hopefully you will get an english manual with it, although I remain doubtful since it's a japanese only model.

Alright, sorry guys for not posting earlier but I did get the unit last week and wow was the shipping fast.

Within 2 business days DHL was at my door with the package. This is faster than domestic shipping!

Anyhow, I was sort of disappointed with the packaging - or should i say, lack of packaging. They just shipped the original box and it had damages around from shipping. Luckily tho, the unit itself was safe.

To the main part, after playing around with it for a few days now, I'm extremely pleased with the build quality.

Sony did a good job making this mainstream product easy to use while keeping it professional looking. The sound quality on this is awesome, but the bass seems a bit over done.

Well enough praising, the important part is the cons of this machine, which sadly to say, exists.

The usb -> hdd transfer on this is SLOW. it took an hour to transfer 2gb of mp3s.

I tried sending hdd -> md and it was surprsing fast, but doing the opposite had some issues. The unit gives me an error (in japanese) saying, "cannot do digital transfer due to existing tracks" and resorts to 1x REC speed of legacy md players. Good thing i dont decide to backup all my minidiscs.

I'll post pics soon after i get my camera working again.

On a short notice, does anyone know which of these three is best for CD -> HDD?

ATRAC3 132kbps, ATRAC3+ 256kbps, or MP3 192kbps.

I'm hesistant since I use NetMD for portable listening. What would be my best choice?

Atrac3+ at 256kps is good because it keeps decent sound quality as well as gapless.

I wonder, when you upload a minidisc to HDD what rate is it converted to? Hi-SP? PCM? Or even as is (Atrac SP)?

The issue with slow speeds of transfer sounds like my Aiwa mindisc Hi-Fi, which prohibited 4x copying of MD if the CD had already been copied over once before. It wouldn't allow another hi-speed copy for 1 hour. Keep trying and you might get it to work, it must be one of those stupid leftover remnants of NetMD I would imagine.
