Strungup Posted August 17, 2008 Report Share Posted August 17, 2008 Today , I spent 3 1/2 hours in the Studio with the Irish band , and we did mostly 1 take recording today ( No multitracking ) My setup was 2 - ECM 23F3 Sony Condenser mics on a stand going left right at about 100 degrees separation , and a Dynamic full range mic on a small floor stand close to the Vocals/Drum player . ( Decca Tree configuration) 3 mics to the Mixer Left / Right and center Mixer then to my compressor/Limiter Main outs Left/Right to compressor , then compressor to the Recording Console . As a Side mix , I decided just for General purposes , to come from the Tape out ( RCA 's ) of the mixer to the DR1 , I used a JVC - RCA to 1/8 " stereo cable that has attenuation built it by means of resistors ( Radio Shack used to have something similar I think) Using this cable Allowed me to use the Limiter ( or any other effects ) that apply to the Mic 1 input . The result was actually quite good , surprisingly so , The Limiter , let me crank up the gain ( Mic gain Mid , level on the dial 9 ) almost all the way up . What was truly interesting was the noise that is normally in the Mic 1 Input was NOT there , the recording was quiet , and the recorded material was Punchy and full . I usually use the MD this way , but I have to run the Compressor thru the effects loop witch then reduces my stereo image ( Mono Send , Stereo return , resulting in a semi mono sound ) Doing this I ran out of the MAIN outs of the mixer thru the compressor , full Left right in /out , and then full left /right Tape out to the DR1 from the tape outs . I wish I was allowed to post some of this , but I dont have permission from the band yet , I will try to get them to let me post one example from these sessions .
