MZ-R30 Problems

Hi all,

I'm having problems with my MZ-R30.

First of all, I recently bought a new battery for it, but it doesn't seem to be charging - maybe it's the battery, but I'll leave it in for a while to see what happens.

The other thing is that the controls are doing funny things; when I press the stop button, it changes the playback mode as well as stopping, i.e. it goes through the repeat, shuffle cycle etc. That also happens when I press the volume and forward/rewind buttons. In record mode, all those buttons seem to change from mono to stereo recording. Finally the mode button on the lid doesn't appear to be working.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem, and if it can be fixed easily (e.g. by me)?

Is there a "factory reset" operation for the MZ-R30?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

John

PS - I've tried searching for MZ-R30 on this forum, but nothing comes up!

sounds like there is a buildup of crud under the control panel , dust and other crap from just the age of it , and some of it might be bridging the contacts to other controls .

Take some masking tape and sticky side up , taped a 6 or 7 inch long strip to a table where you can work , then using a Jewelers screwdriver , start taking the chassis screws out and place them ON the tape in the order you take them out ( some of them are different sizes) putting them in line on the tape will allow you to easily put them back in the same or reverse order ( A piece of paper marked with numbers taped down above the tape helps)

you may need several pieces of tape , each for 1 section of screws ( Chassis , then inside , circuit board , etc )

Very gently clean the entire inside of the unit , Contacts with a Q-tip and Alchohol , clean the battery contacts same way , then close it all back up , making sure to put each screw where it belongs .

Thanks for the advice. I blew through the lid and it fixed the mode button for a short time, so I took the lid off and the display and cleaned that bit up, put it back together and that seems to have sorted it for the moment.

As for the batter charging problem, I've tried cleaning the contacts but it hasn't worked. At this place there is a service bulletin listed for the MZ-R30 no battery charging problem; does anyone know what it contains before I shell out for it (or have a copy!).

Thanks

John
