I currently have a Sony MZ-NH600 Which has been great but its now looking rough from wear an tear of being used for quite a while. This year my been MZ-NH600 has not been used much and i've not followed MD so i need suggestions on what would be a good upgrade that can do everything the NH600 can do and a bit more.

I'm not looking for something high-end or whatever but as long as its fairly well priced and is an improvement over what i have now then i don't mind.

Cheers in advance for all suggestions i get.

Depends on how much is a 'bit' more, though the logical one-step-up recorder would be the MZ-NH700, or if you want a radio then the NHF800. You can also add a radio remote to the NH700 later which will 'upgrade' it to the NHF800. With the NH700/NHF800 you'll get a mic input, (possibly) slightly better build quality, er I think that's about it for 'extra' features. The NH900 may also be worth looking at for its 'line out' and digital amp.

Then there's the RH710, the 2nd generation equivalent of the NH600, which adds 'native' MP3 playback (through Sonicstage), but not much else. Or the RH10 and RH910, which have fancy displays and mic inputs (but no line out). Personally I think the 1st gen Hi-MDs sound better.

Lastly there's the creme de la menthe of MD recorders, the MZ-RH1 (Mac version is called M200), which does all of the above, and can upload everything (that's unprotected). This, plus maybe the 2nd generation MDs are the only ones you're likely to find new/in unused condition, but will have a hefty price tag.

There are rare playback/photo etc variants, but I;ll leave that to someone else. Hope that helps...

Paint coming off?

What else would you like to do that this unit does not? MIC input? Remote as standard?

I think you will like the MZ-NH700 (also MZ-NHF800) because it has a sane made-for-humans jog wheel on the unit, unlike the MZ-NH600's relatively uncomfortable, unflattened, low-surface-area shrimpy and odd made-for-unhumans one. It also has a mic input for some easy live recording fun. And should come with a remote and AC adaptor standard, but you'll probably find it second-hand only.

However if you want a new one just because the MZ-NH600 looks a bit beaten, I wouldn't bother, really. The MZ-NH700 will get the same way with enough use, unfortunately. Painted plastic sucks, frankly.

Well the front is coming apart, the screen is going as it doesn't always display things properly and the battery cover is missing, so it looks rough and is falling apart so that's why I've decided to change.

MIC input and remote as standard would be what i want any future unit to do over my current unit

It sounds like the thread starter is looking to leave the MD format period. There are some professional (and very expensive) Flash based recorders by Sony and other manufacturers but I don't think they even approach the editing capabilities and portability of Minidisc.

I don't want to leave the MD because as stated "There are some professional (and very expensive) Flash based recorders by Sony and other manufacturers but I don't think they even approach the editing capabilities and portability of Minidisc."

:o What have you done to her!:huh: Good enough reasons to replace her, anway. B)

MZ-NH700 (or MZ-NHF800) for you. Keep in mind that even your current one can take an optional remote you can buy separately (on ebay, etc) if you want to do a quick upgrade, too. But it probably is time she was retired. Good luck.

She has been knocked off my desk a few times either because of me being a bit careless or because of one of my cats jumping up on my table and or desk and knocking her over but i've had her for a good 3-4 years or whatever now.

I was originally going to buy a RM-MC35ELK remote for my nh600 but i never got round to buying one.
