I have won an MD recorder: Sony MZ NH700 (£56 inc postage) (ironic that one's now advertised here - too late for me).

and a microphone: SONY ECM MS907 (£40.50 inc postage) I know some of you suggested a clip-on, but my son specifically wants a hand-held, for interviews mostly.

Neither seems to have been quite as good a bargain as I'd hoped for, but I'm very happy as I didn't have time to bid on loads of auctions and they'll arrive before my son's birthday.

Thanks to all of you who offered such invaluable advice - fingers crossed that I haven't been scammed.

I'd say you've got a good buy there with the NH700. Although it's not top-of-the-range (i.e RH1) it has HiMD technology and should be a good introductory player for your son. In addition it is far cheaper than the RH1 too. I've got the NHF800 which I believe is similar apart from having a radio built into the remote, and I enjoy using it.
