How to Repair a MiniDisc Deck

A minidisc deck is a recording device that is used for capturing digital audio files to disc. Minidisc decks are made up of a variety of delicate components that can malfunction, but if something in your minidisc deck breaks, it may be able to be repaired. If you have a minidisc deck that is failing to properly play or record, there are a few quick fixes that you can perform on your own.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Instructions

Step

1

Remove your minidisc deck from the heat. If the deck stops working for no reason, it might be due to the temperature in the room. Extremely hot temperatures will prevent the deck from working.

Step

2

Look for missing screws. If the buttons on a minidisc deck are pressed too hard, this can shake the interior screws loose. If they fall out, the screws will end up on the laser unit and you will get a "Disc Error" message. In order to find out if the desk has important screws missing inside the unit, you will have to remove the casing. The case of a minidisc deck can be slipped off after removing all the external screws that hold the casing in place. Sometimes, simply removing any screws from the laser unit will fix the unit.

Step

3

Move the exterior screws around. Minidisc decks often have 10 screws holding the bottom cover to the top cover. These screws are generally different sizes and if they are placed incorrectly, they will cause a variety of issues, such as the deck door not opening. On some decks, one missing screw can cause the entire unit not to function.

Step

4

Replace the overwrite head if the unit won't record. When the overwrite head is the problem, the unit will continue to function. Playback will work as normal, and when you attempt to record on the minidisc deck, it will appear to be working at first, but recording will either not begin or the unit will act as if it is recording and then there will be nothing burned to the disc upon playback. If the overwrite head is the problem, it must be replaced.
