Question

Hi. I just bought an A3000 and being a sony i was prepared to face the software just to have a good mp3 player. but after a day's use i think it's too slow. I'm mainly using it in my car and there isn't really much time to wait for it to do things, so i'm wondering if there's any way to speed it up.

is there any way to defrag it? i'm only using half the memory but a defrag nearly always helps.

The slowness i'm talking about is the 2-3 seconds to skip to the next track (even if it's in the same album, i'd understand that delay if it was on shuffle). notice i'm talkgina about skipping, not playing. it normallyu plays straight ot the next track with no delay.

the other delay i'm annoyed about is pressing back in "now playing" to get to the list of songs that are playing. even if there's only one song in the list, this takes 3-4 seconds. that's really annoying when you want to find a song. I end up keeping back pressed to get to the home menu (i only just found that one out) and finding the song from there.

IN the end though i got so annoyed with it i found an even faster way to turn it off, keep the option button pressed! don't think this is car material.

and yes i have the latest firmware, usign sonicstage cp.

some users defraged it and it became faster, but i prefer use connect player and it's fast

Does it have anything to do with the HD spinning up when you make a menu request. I know some of the older Sony DAPs did that any time you access the buttons.

Also, I didn't know you could still find the Connect software. Any clue how I could get the most current version. I am a bit interested in trying it just to see if my system will run the program.

Defragmenting helps just if it's too slow during navigation (it may get incredibly slow just to move from one list to the next). The 3-4 seconds to access the menu from now playing or to skip to the next track will remain there. It's ridiculous, really, that Sony doesn't put enough RAM there to have fast access to the database. To me, that's what happens. Every time you access the menu or skip a track, the player needs to spin up the HD to access the database and learn what to do. I'm tempted to say the A3000 is even slower than the HD1 (it certainly is much slower to startup).

If i convert everything to Atrac will it be faster? I do like atrac, i had a nw-e99 1gb and managed to fit 400 songs on it. But it will take ages to do 3000 songs.

If it makes a difference in the players speed though then i'm all for it. My main resoning taht it will be faster is that if it's taking time to load them to ram, atrac's are smaler than mp3s so shoudl take less time?

EDIT: forget that it doesn't work. i tried converting one album to atrac 105 and it makes absolutely no difference in skipping lag or the lag you get when pressing back to list the album.

annoying thing is i saw the same delay when i only had 100 songs on it so removing songs will nto make a difference (unless you're tlaking abotu the delay to show the list of all the songs).
