Hi guys,

recently I read a lot of storys telling that Sony isn't going to develop ATRAC any further and moving to AAC.

To bad, all my CDs, far more than 250, are ripped in ATRAC and played back formerly on Sony Harddisk Walkmen and nowadays on my PSP. Good enough, my PSP is able to play back AAC.

Can you advise me and all others to which format to switch to?

AAC? Which bitrate?

Is AAC comparable to Atrac3Plus?

Any source of this rumor?

Makes sense, since Sony starts supporting AAC on the PSP, cellphones, and the NW-Axxxx series. AAC is also a part of the MPEG4 standard. Hopefully Sony will also support HE-AAC, which is surprisingly really good at 48kbps (much better and listenable than Atrac3+ at this bitrate), and support AAC as a gapless codec (Nero's AAC + foobar = gapless, iTunes != gapless).

awwww man that's bad....

I just got my player and now they phase out atrac. Why do they not develop it and make it easily available for conversion a la WMA...Even a plugin in dbPowerAmp and a few Atrac plugins in winamp would do the trick...

Or will atrac go the way of the Dodo...

People have been saying "Minidisc is dead" for 14 years now. MD, of course, records/plays ATRAC.

I think ATRAC will continue to evolve and find a place in Sony products for many years to come.

Not being popular in North America doesn't mean it's dead, failed, or whatever.
