Question

Hi there - I have had my NW-HD1 for about a year and a half now and have been having a few problems with it for the last few months with tracks skipping and the "no database found" message coming up every so often - Gives me a heart attack usually but leaving it off or turning the battery off for half an hour or so solves the problem. Until now.

They seem have completely disappeared this time time yet i can view the device properties through windows which is telling me they i am using 7.8GB so they must be there!

That is far as I can get on wondows however as I cant access the device. For some reason I cannot browse the folders which I NEED to do to back up my tracks!

When I try to I can click into the device windows explorer stops responding.

Today I upgraded to the new sonicstage.connect thingy so I need to back my tracks up, I've sold all my cds and all!

To be honest I'm not that bothered about the HD1 I think its had its chips but I really need to get my tracks, can anyone please help? !

That happened to me once. While transferring tracks to my NW-HD1, I accidentally knocked it down to the floor mid-transfer. Apart from getting dust and scratches, the 'No Database Found' message cropped up, despite the fact that I had (according to Windows Explorer) a few hundred tracks in there.

Unfortunately (in your case) I had to initialise the player, then transfer all my tracks in My Library to the player again.

So the only thing you can do is initialise your player, then transfer tracks to the player again.

One more point. It's a good idea to back up your Library before you upgrade your version of SonicStage, so the Libary doesn't go all corrupted. :)

Yeah didn't think that a upgrade that is "compatible" would mean having to delete all my songs. I don't have a "my library", I only have so much space on my laptop so I tended to delete everything from it as soon as it was transferred

Defo going back to Ipod next!

You could try and copy all the music files from your player (assuming that you haven't initialised your player and thus wiped out your entire music collection) to your laptop's hard drive, then import them into My Library, then initialse your player so that the hard drive's empty, then transfer them to the player . But the catch is, the files on your NW-HD1 have to be DRMless (i.e. no copy protection). And you're gonna have a bunch of letters and numbers as the file name.

The problem, as I understand, is that he cannot even access the files through Windows Explorer. Then I really don't see any solution. If it were possible to copy the files to the hard-drive, assuming they're not copy protected, it would be easy to restore file names correctly. It would just be a matter of using the backup tool, delete the original library and restore from the backup tool. But if you cannot even save the files, there may be some hard-drive problem, and that makes everything more complicated.

Yeah tried it on my girls laptop - no joy.

Hey Dvno1,

hey there, from the sound of it i think it is the hard drive that has gone defective. If you're unable to look through the drive via Windows Explorer that's a sign that there's an underlying problem. If the database was corrupt, it should still be there when you dig around using Windows Explorer, but since you cant even access it, I have reason to believe that it's the drive that's gone bad.

Do you notice if you hear slight "clicks" when the drive is spinning up/accessing info?

P.S. In the future you should always back up your music files.

The same applies to all your data files as well. A hard drive will *always* die, no-matter what. You should back it up on a removable medium..
