Question

Hi folks,

I'm in the process of trading my hd5h audio player for a psp. my reasons?

1) I will be able to watch my dvd's on the psp, by ripping them and copying them on to a memory stick

2) I can play the odd game

3) I can get a remote for the psp with a fm radio - ifm psp from griffin tech - i really would like a radio remote for my hd5!

4) Still listen to my atrac music files on the psp

5) i can use the psp on my wi fi network at home...

The concerns i have are

1) Size, i know the psp is going to be bigger than my hd5 but hopefully not to big to put in a jacket inside pocket and listen with headphones to music/radio

3) My music collection, i have 20gb plus on the hd5h, the thing is i know i never listen to a lot of it, and would be content enough to transfer albums on and off memory sticks.. but does the psp integrate with sonicstage cp? will i be able to just connect up the psp with memory stick inserted and transfer on songs using sonicstage the way i would to my hd5?

4) whats the psp like for watching movies? how complicated is the process of converting dvd's to be able to store them and watch on the psp?

Advice appreciated...

cheers,

mick

The PSP is quite big compared to a NW-HD5. But not so bulky that it won't fit anywhere. I can put my psp in my pocket.

Converting DVD's to the PSP is very easy. There's a lot of software to do that. Like NERO recode and PSP video 9.

The PSP integrates perfectly with sonicstage! Its almost the same as transferring music to your NW-HD5 I think.

The PSP shows album art and accepts WMA, AAC and MP3 as well. The only disadvantage of the PSP compared to the NW-HD5 is the memory and the size. But the memory doesn't bother me and the size is something I can live with, knowing I have a widescreen 'portable cinema' in my pocket :P

Watching DVD's on the PSP is just awsome! the screen is amazing. Like I said, it's just a portable cinema. very cool.

Also the soundquality of the PSP is very good! although it was not in the first place designed to play audio files, it's ver good in playing them! I think my PSP sounds better than my friends ipod nano. It's more natural, and balanced. The sound is more dynamic, if you like.

So if you don't mind the drop in memory capacity, The change in size and buying a memory stick, the PSP is well worth trying!

But this is just my opinion :)

Thanks guys, i read a report on cnet recently that rated the psp actually quite high in terms of audio quality, i think i've pretty much made my mind up at this stage. i', going to try and sell my hd5h and buy a psp with a 2gb card to start with... in a few months if i cant live with the psp for music i might by the next gen sony audio player which is bound to be around by then

well guys,

the deed is done..... i have bought a psp with a 4gb card.. and i'm now using it on my cummute to work,...

early impressions are

1) Its a lot heavier than my hd5.. well thats an obvious one i guess.. it still fits into my jacket pocket so its not too big.. i have a logitech hard case for it and it does add a bit of wieght but it protects it well...

i have converted a few movies from dvd to try out.. i'm using pspvideo 9 and am still fiddling with the settings... havent tried avc yet but thats my next stop...

watching full screen 16 * 9 material is very good... watching 2 - 35 - 1 ratio with black bars top and bottom is a bit small... also the volume of the films is low but this can be remedied by boosting the volume in pspvideo 9

music,,,

pleased enough with it actually... have started adding album art to sonic stage and its a nice touch.. wish you could see a bigger picture as the track is playing

the supplied remote is handy also for volume/skipping tracks etc

the sound quality of atrac 132 is fine.. my tracks are all 256 in sonicstage but to preserve space i've decided to go for 132 on the psp... quality is grand...

so far i havent played any games but i've picked up wipeout pure today second so will give that a bash on the way home

one thing on the train thats annoying.. if you are sitting in direct sunlight it can be very hard to see the screen...

will have to pick shady seats :)

right better go.. thanks for the advice guys.. .all in all pretty happy with my decision... the video conversion is slow but when i get on top of it should be good...

cheers,

mick
