MP4 is just a container format. To be more precise, you probably meant AAC. AAC, although is pretty good, is not much better compared to Lame MP3. If you think AAC is good, try HE-AAC, the first codec that I found to be listenable at 48kbps. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any DAPs that support HE-AAC, except for cellphones.

im using lc-aac (low complexity) at cbr 448kbs or vbr 450kbs the main difference is 320kbs mp3 go upto 16khz where as 448kbs go to at least 20khz the same as cd.

im goin to try recording off vinyl to see how high it can go as iv got records that go upto 45khz

no matter what they say you can hear the difference in 4khz its just people would rather put 13,000 mp3s at 32kbs on a play as sony says you can put that many tracks on than put 4,000 good sounding 320kbs mp3s or mp4s

its like people dont care what music sounds like nowadays aslong as its an artist they like phones for example worst sounding tweeters iv ever hear with full range being played though them to make them sound worse

hence why i got a nw-a3000 its rated as the best sounding out of the portable player range

Huh? I don't know what kind of MP3 codec you're using, but Lame MP3 doesn't restrict to 16khz at high bitrates. Check this link for a full disclosure of the lowpass settings for Lame MP3: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=18091

With Lame MP3, you can disable any lowpass with -k switch on -V2 and above.

Going above 320kbps for a lossy codec is pointless. Above 320kbps, might as well use lossless. You need to learn about ABX: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=16295

:lol::lol: 16000 is actually the cut of for 192 mp3 files

mp3 files have 2 diff freq, 32mhz, 44.1mhz, and 48mhz, with 16mhz per channel, 22.05mhz per channel and 24mhz per channel respectively. if you have 320 mp3s at 16000 it usually a sign of re-encoding from a 192 file lol.

i buy 320 mp3s off sites and all are above 20mhz per channel which most cutting off at 22.05 per channel since they are 44.1mhz. 320 is fine for the a3000, even a good encoded 192 sounds amazing.
