G-Protection = Audio Compression?

Question

Howdy,

I read over at Head-Fi that CD Walkman G Protection causes Redbook audio to be compressed in order to provide adequate anti shock functionality. I'd like to know if this is true, and if so, how much information is lost using G Protection 1 ?

Would it be possible to completely disable G Protection on the D-NE20?

G-Protection, as far as Compressed audio goes, shouldn't affect the final sound output. The unit spins up and down as needed to fill its buffer. Since the disc is not spinning fully, there isn't really need to use G-Prot 2 unless you're that paranoid.

As for redbook, there are some compression involved, but chances are you won't hear any distortions or artifacts due to that particular compression. Don't lose sleep over it.

As Damage said (also indicated in the manual), when you're playing MP3/AtracCD, G-protection setting is ignored. G-protection is only used when you're playing standard AudioCD, and I find even at setting 1, my NE20 hardly ever skips, unless if you're running/jogging. There's no way to turn G-protection "off," but I assume setting number 1 is "off" in terms that it doesn't compress the music.
