Question

i have noticed that when i choose one of the manual eq settings on the player and i play a song that has a fade-in at the begging of a song, there is A LOT of interference. (ie hissing which is nothing new with sonys, but i also here static pops and distortion to the track) i havent got the volume too high and have tried different headphones and also turning off the sound enhancers but i still get it. the only way i can stop it is by having no eq on, and having the sound quality as normal. has anyone else noticed this or could my device be faulty???

maybe the song itself is bad quality...so when you play it with a good quality sound system you notice all the little nooks and crannies..i've noticed this with my bros sound system...for his car...he improved it a lot and some songs you notice their quality isnt as good as others.

You're not the only one who feels some eq functions on the 8xx give unwanted artifacts. A reviewer here (can't remember who right now0 claimed he sometimes heart a sort of echo. I find that using EQ-functions (and DSEE and clearstereo) add a little bit of unwanted sharpness so I prefer to listen to me 808 flat, despite that I find the sound slightly to bright without eq (even on my Shure e4s), but I get used to that rather fast.

The nature of the audible artefacts probably depends on the codec, bitrate and phnoes used too.

Me too. My real problem is that the player sounds a little bit too bright without EQ.

With my former HD1 and A3000 I felt the tonality was perfect without any EQ.

But I'm getting used to the sound signature of the 8xx, so can live with it.

I cannot concur. Tonality in AW 3000/1000 was rather dampened, sound far from clean. Back then the HD5 ruled supreme and the successor devices of the aw series clearly

fielded inferior sq through the board with a petty snr of 84 db on the aw3000 and even worse signature on early oled flash devices. Let´s not forget that sony only returned back to the (shared) top of sq with the s7. As far as the equalizer is concerned on the a800, I have set some weird custom settings and apart from altered sound couldn´t find any hardware related distortion. Same holds true for the presets. I mainly use nero and itunes aac encoded files at around 200kbits. The new sony sound processor really shines with aac files and claimed battery life is also the longest with aac files.

Back to the equalizer issue: which codec was used and what did the equalizer setting look like?

i used atrac3plus at 192kbps. the eq setting doesn't matter it does it on ANY custom eq no matter how u set it. im really getting pissed off with it now, cus its really noticeable. i'll try encoding some of my music to aac files to see if it does it with them. also i dont no wether anyone else has noticed this but the music i have imported with sonicstage 4.3 that came on the disc with the player sound much fresher than tracks encoded with the downloaded version of sonicstage. just wondered wether anyone else had noticed it. anyhoo ill encode my files at aac and let u no the results. if it doesnt solve the problem i think i may have to sell the player and stick with my nws706.:wave:

ok i tried both aac and mp3 files for the same song. and it STILL distorts at the start. its not only the one song its all songs that have a fade-in (or fade-out for that matter). the only way i can describe it is if u get digital freezing or pixelation with a freeview box u tend to get a high pitched tone for a split second. its a bit like that but not as harsh sounding. i cannot stand the standard eq with this player (i like more bass and more treble). do u think it could be a bad batch maybe? i think im gonna have to sell it if i cant solve the problem. this has really annoyed me because apart from this, the player is by far the best on the market. what a shame. looks like ill have to settle with using my nws706, which i have NO distortion with whatever the eq setting. the sq on that player is quite remarkable. does anyone have any solutions for this problem and has anyone else had the same problem apart from the ppl above???

Onm my ATRAC 256 kbs and Shure E4 headphone I get the impression that the more effects are on (clearstereo, EQ, VPT, normalisation) and/ or the more extreme the EQ settings are, the higher the distortion. Using only the EQ with mild adjustments gives a very acceptable result, but of course, YMMV.

of course, that may be an effect of too high processor load. I would also argue that some of the sound modifications counteract each other and thus create "distortion". For testing purposes, I´d ask you to email me a few tracks that exhibit this sort of behavior so that I can try to reproduce the results on my 808. Coming from the punchy 706 I also found the 808 bass response to be too realistic. I have had good results with clear bass set to the first enhancement setting. Looking at the 706 response curve one can see a clear bass spike from 20-100hz. Most people prefer this setup, some disagree. I haven´t seen the results on the a8 yet but would expect a flat response line.
