u r totally wrong the gap is nearly neglieble i mean its when u set to winamp to 2 or 1 crossfading setting it works like one track after another in shuffle mode.but it dont have any option to set in crossfade time.may be in future e series sony have also added that.

well i mean in nwe016 and nwa 808

How I can be wrong when you specifically said pauses of less than 2 seconds? A pause is a pause. The gap might be really short/almost negligible, but a gap is a gap. I have the E99, and while it does not add any gaps when playing back MP3s, there are still gaps during track change, simply due to the MP3 format itself. If the 2 tracks are played overlapping with each other, maybe it's more a buffering issue/bug, not a feature.

Cross fading is when the volume of the current track is reduced, while the volume of the next track increases. A pause is when playback stops then continues, this can be due to changing tracks. A gap is an artifact for how the audio file was created, where is a period of silence at the end or the beginning of a track. Three different technological issues. It is good to have a wish list of feature that future players will have. For cross fading to work multiple tracks (memory locations) must be read and combined into one track. It would be a technological headache for the designer. Cross fading would be more of an issue than a feature, such as memory leakage.
