hi all, before the ps3's release one of the main selling points was the fact that it had hdmi connectivity and could display at 1080p (which the 360 couldn't, at that time anyway) so my question is this. if the ps3 can display at 1080p and sony made such a big deal about that fact, why is it that every time i go to purchase a game and flip over the case it states that it can only be displayed at 720p!!! this is lucicrous y design a system that can output a display at optimum levels and then design your games to display at a lesser rate. this just doesnt make sense at all. the 360 is now able to display at 1080p and suprise suprise the games are now coming out at 1080p. dont get me wrong there are games that display at 1080p on the ps3 but not enough of them. it is a totally pointless practice imo. well done sony just another cock up to add to your sad pathetic list of cock ups!!! (which is growing by the day with the equalizer on the nwa806, but thats another argument):sad::sad:

1080p isn't just an output resolution, it's a rendering resolution. Right now, only the highest end PC graphics cards can display PS3-like graphics at 1920x1080 i.e. 1080p. I think it's unrealistic to expect that the PS3, even with the Cell processor, to display graphics like those in Motorstorm at 1080p, at least right now.

Also, it's much more the graphical effects and design that will determine graphical quality. I've played Gears of War in 720p and 1080i and the difference is almost impossible to distinguish. What's more important for visual fidelity is the engine used, rather than the resolution displayed.

1080p rendering uses much more video ram than 720p and some argue that both 360 and ps3 don´t even have enough frame buffer to support it.

in games I guess you could tell a difference on screens 42 in and up but from 3-4m the benefit gets marginal.

Yesterday Sony came out with new firmware supporting 1080p/24 and dvd upscaling up to 1080p. According to the guys at the avs forums it works admirably fine.

I reckon Sony will be able to harness the full potential of the cell for blue ray oriented applications which will keep the ps3 among the top blue ray players for quite some time.
