Question

I have a NW A-1000, Using mostly 132 kb/s ATRAC3. I heard to increase battery life you must be using around 48Kb/s. Is there any way i can convert the songs already on my player or will ihave to wipe the whole device and start from scratch?

Will there be a signifigant difference in sound quality? as i usually have the player running into some sort of speaker system...

I'm using sonic stage 4.3

any help/ideas welcome

You have to start from scratch. Converting a lossy format one more time is generally a bad idea (soundwise) but if you are looking for more space you may consider it (accepting a worse soundquality)

Lossy format? Just my battery is pretty crap. I use it when i'm driving. Might consider buyin a cigarette lighter charger for it.

thanks

there are lossless formats and lossy formats in music.

lossless as in, the quality of the sound file is identical to the original on the cd (wav) and it will be almost impossible to tell one from the other while listening. (flac and ogg, etc)

lossy formats, mp3, aac, wma, compress the music to a state where some quality from the original is lost and certain frequencies are cut out in order to minimize the sound file. this has a negative impact on the song's quality, generally the lower the birate of a song, the lower the quality.

Re encoding from a lossy format to another lossy format, say wma to mp3 or mp3 to mp3, you lose even more quality.

Ah thanks for explaining. I always thought that converting from one format to another would have some sort of consequence. Most of my songs are in WMA format. But still i'm listening to my walkman in the car via a Plug in FM transmitter. So i always lose a lil quality.

anways im wandering off the point here....sorry

**EDIT**

Just on that note, What is the difference between ATRAC 3 and ATRAC? they're my two options for sending songs to my walkman or else just send in original format. but i know what that is. Just wondering about the differece on the two above also which is best? (if both at same rate kb/s)

I found that re-encoding from MP3 to Atrac3 was fine as long as the bit rate is kept the same. I do this with all the songs I transfer (to increase battery life) and there isnt any noticeable loss in sound quality.
