Question

I have been a long time ipod user. My first ipod was the 3rd gen and I've used them all in between the 3g and the current models. My most recent ipod was the 3G video nano which IMO is the best ipod to date (not counting the iphone). The videonano is an amazing little device and I enjoyed it but I had to return it and use my refund for some bills.

Now that I have resolved those issues I set out to find a new mp3 player and while at a store I was able to check out the new Sony's.

Often in the past when I made the move from an ipod to 'something else' I am always left disappointed and frustrated that nobody but Apple can get the most basic things right. However, something about these new Sony's had me intrigued.

Playing around with the 616 I just felt like something was different here so I went for it and got one.

So far I love it. It's easily the best non-ipod I've ever used. I chose the 616 model because I wanted the FM radio. Even though I watch a fair number of videos I do not find the 1.8" display to be a problem. It's fine for music videos and South Park which is all I need it for.

I love how this player is so simple and to the point. Everything works how it should. I'm using a $15 pair of buds and the sound is deep and rich. The display is crystal clear and vibrant. The drag and drop is quick and painless. All of my 'ipod' videos have worked flawlessly on my new Sony.

I really like the folder option for organizing content.

The battery life so far is excellent.

The player is extremely comfortable to use and hold. Sony kept it simple and really nailed it. I still think ipods are great and I'm sure I'll buy another in the future. But so far I am very pleased with my new Sony and I just wanted to say that Sony really did a fine job.

The ipod has such mainstream hold that it's hard for people to open their minds and look around. There are a ton of duds out there and nobody has been able to beat the ipod/itunes hardware/software integration. But,if you do take a peak you might be surprised at what else is out there.
